In Switzerland there are countless places that present themselves in winter as a paradise for snow enthusiasts and piste-hungry holidaymakers. However, one municipality in particular stands out: Davos in the canton of Graubünden is considered the cradle of winter sports in the Alpine republic. As early as 1864, the first guests came to the town for a high-altitude cure. Since then, the town has developed into the famous and popular cold season destination it is today. The snowy surroundings provide guests with a colourful bouquet of attractive activities. Skiers and snowboarders get their money's worth on no less than 300 kilometres of pistes - whether beginner, advanced or professional. For those who want to fortify themselves in between, there are numerous huts and restaurants offering delicious delicacies. In addition to the alpine delights, another 100 kilometres of perfectly prepared cross-country ski trails make Davos a paradise for cross-country skiers. Whether freestyle or classic technique - seldom can you overcome your inner pig dog in such a way that is worth seeing. Ice sports also have a home in Davos. Hockey, ice skating, curling: numerous ice rinks in the region provide exuberant fun on two blades. In addition to various fun sports such as fat biking or airboarding, a romantic carriage ride through the pretty side valleys rounds off the offer.
Precise Hotel Seehof
After so much action comes relaxation: the Precise Hotel Seehof Davos, the oldest in the city, has a glorious history. Today it offers a magical blend of tradition and modernity. After extensive renovations, the venerable house is also one of the most innovative hotels in Switzerland. In three restaurants, a lounge and a bar, guests experience top gastronomy at the highest level.
Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvédère
With the Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvédère Davos one of the most legendary hotels in the world is also located in the city. The historic luxury hotel has already hosted countless personalities from politics and society in its 145-year history. Even today, it shines with incomparable service, excellent cuisine and an outstanding wellness offer.
Andermatt
Another extremely worthwhile winter sports resort in Switzerland is Andermatt in the canton of Uri. At over 1,400 metres, the town impresses with its excellent location: sheltered between mountains and yet in a wide valley. It usually snows in late autumn, and the pistes on the almost 3,000-metre-high Gemsstock are ready accordingly early. In the real winter months from December to February, Andermatt is then considered particularly snow-sure. The ski arena extends over the Oberalp Pass to Sedrun in Graubünden and on to Disentis. It is both a family skiing area and a paradise for demanding skiers. Andermatt's cross-country skiing centre is located in the Nordic House at the bottom of the valley. The cross-country trail leads over 28 kilometres to Hospental and Realp. Of course, Andermatt also has an impressive selection of accommodation.
Radisson Blu Hotel Reussen
Among the most spectacular is certainly the four-star superior house Radisson Blu Hotel Reussen. With its modern Scandinavian casualness combined with typical alpine chalet elements, the hotel radiates a warm and cosy atmosphere. For relaxation, the 25m² panoramic pool and the luxurious spa area of the hotel.
Rhaetian Railway
In order to see as much as possible during a winter trip to Switzerland, a trip with the Rhaetian Railway is recommended. Especially the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano in Northern Italy promises unique views and breathtaking moments on rails during the cold season. Guests experience a perfect symbiosis of nature and technology on the journey. Highlights include the famous Landwasser Viaduct near Filisur or the dizzying circular viaduct in Brusio. The section of the line between Thusis and Tirano has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. The line with its 55 tunnels and 196 bridges is in part more than 100 years old. It is still regarded today as a true masterpiece of railway engineering development in high Alpine regions. The express reaches its highest point at 2,253 metres at the Bernina Ospizio station. From the roof of the Rhaetian Railway, guests enjoy an outstanding view of the glittering Lago Bianco. Excellent service and delicious local delicacies served during the ride round off the experience.
