Lübeck in Schleswig-Holstein

The former capital of the Hanseatic League shines in the style of medieval brick Gothic. One of the city's many landmarks is St. Mary's Church, which is located at the highest point of Lübeck's Old Town Island. Also in the Old Town, which by the way has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, are 90 winding passageways and green courtyards that form the city. Insider tip: Timmendorfer Strand is only 15 to 20 minutes away by train.

Potsdam in the north

The capital of Brandenburg is often overlooked due to its proximity to the federal capital Berlin. However, kings have already resided here. For example, the Sanssouci Palace was commissioned by King Frederick the Great in the 18th century and also served as a summer residence for the Hohenzollern dynasty. Especially in autumn, a trip to the Havel river must also be on every holidaymaker's to-do list. The city also boasts many boutiques, small arts and crafts businesses and galleries.

The Franconian Bamberg

The Upper Franconian town boasts itself as a historic gardening and beer town. For over 600 years, vegetable cultivation has been practiced here in the middle of the city to this day. The beer tradition is also emphasized. Of the original 68 historic breweries, there are still eight breweries, which are especially known for the local specialty, the Rauchbier. Bamberg's old town is one of the largest largely intact historic city centres in Germany and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.

Weimar in the heart of Germany

The university town of Weimar is located almost exactly in the middle of Germany. Goethe and Schiller, two of the most important personalities of the Weimar Classicism, lived here. The former homes of these two great poets and thinkers are now home to museums in their honour. Weimar also boasts the impressive Belvedere Palace. In addition to its lavish facade, the baroque palace also offers a large park with exotic plants. The city also has regional delicacies to offer. The best Thuringian dumplings can be found in the "Scharfe Ecke" and the classic, the Thuringian Rostbratwurst, can be enjoyed with preference at "Teufel" on the market square.

Mainz, the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate

The city of Mainz has a long history. It was founded by the Romans as early as 13 BC; remains from this period can still be visited in part today. One of the city's landmarks is the Mainz Cathedral, which was built in its original form over 1,000 years ago and today consists of a hodgepodge of different architectural styles. Directly opposite is the Gutenberg Museum of Letterpress Printing. Here the inquisitive tourist learns everything about the most important invention of the last millennium.

Freiburg at the Black Forest

At the western foothills of the Black Forest lies the lively student city of Freiburg im Breisgau. The city impresses with its cute alleys and the idyllic old town. The famous Freiburger Bächle, small watercourses, flow through the middle of Freiburg and provide cooling in many streets during hot summer days. Also worth seeing is the Freiburg Minster and the daily Münstermarkt, which offers its regional delicacies in the morning. Thanks to the proximity to the Black Forest, a trip to the picturesque nature of the Badner Land can be ventured at any time, for example, in only 40 minutes by S-Bahn you can reach the popular Titisee.

Trier - the oldest city in Germany

The city of Trier was built by the Romans over 2,000 years ago and is therefore considered the oldest city in Germany. The remains of the amphitheatre, the Porta Nigra and various other sites were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and are definitely worth a visit. Trier is the birthplace of Karl Marx, one of the most important theorists of the 20th century. In the house where he was born, there is now a museum that provides information about his life and teachings. If you want to see the city in all its glory, head for the vantage point on the Petrisberg. From this historical place, one can overlook the whole of Trier. By the way, in the vernacular the viewpoint is called "Knutschkurve".
