The Canary Islands inspire with a maritime environment with volcanic gorges, palm-fringed hiking trails, steep cliffs and bizarre rock formations. Especially from high above the landscape looks spectacular!
These ten viewpoints are not to be missed!
1. mirador de Sicasumbre, Fuerteventura
The Mirador de Sicasumbre, located in the south of Fuerteventura, reveals a dreamlike view of the surrounding copper-coloured hills and is a paradise for amateur astronomers at the same time. At a height of 300 metres above sea level, Spica, the brightest star in the constellation of Virgo, can be observed particularly well here in the early hours of the night. Hobby astronomers have the possibility to set up their own telescopes and cameras on the Canary Islands. In addition, there are maps with the most important constellations and a vertical sundial to marvel at.
2. Degollada de las Yeguas, Gran Canaria
The landscape that opens up to viewers below the Mirador de la Degollada de las Yeguas in the south of Gran Canaria seems out of this world at first glance. Spreading out over some 15 kilometres is the desert-like Fataga Valley, a huge gorge with almost vertical cliffs and slightly rounded sides. In the background, the blue of the Atlantic Ocean glitters and makes the postcard panorama perfect.
3. mirador del Balcón, Gran Canaria
The Mirador del Balcón is located in the far west of Gran Canaria on a steep cliff that drops vertically into the Atlantic Ocean. From here, the "dragon's tail" is clearly visible, an idiosyncratic rock formation that winds serpentine into the sea and thus reminds one of the mythical beast at a cursory glance. Those who instead look towards the interior of the island will marvel at the gorge of Barranco de La Arena and the lush green valley around the village of La Aldea de San Nicolás.
4. mirador de la cumbrecita, la palma
If the volcanic crater Caldera de Taburiente were a huge amphitheatre, the Mirador de la Cumbrecita would certainly be the best lodge spot. The natural balcony is located at the end of a narrow valley that abruptly breaks off and seems to hang over the huge abyss. The view of the enormous crater, which is a good six and a half kilometres wide, and the many gorges that run through it, is incomparable.
5. mirador de La Peña, El Hierro
From the Mirador de La Peña viewpoint in the north of the island of El Hierro, the consequences of the gigantic landslide that created the El Golfo valley at this spot millions of years ago are still clearly visible. The rocks in the huge basin are densely covered with endemic flora. At the foot of the valley is a volcanic plain where vines and fruit trees grow, which eventually flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
6. mirador de Abrante, La Gomera
At first glance, the Mirador de Abrante on La Gomera seems to be a viewpoint like any other. On closer inspection, however, it becomes clear that the visitors here are not standing on a large rock face, but are virtually floating above it. From the edge of the view point, a seven-metre-long glazed platform rises directly above the abyss. Brave visitors are rewarded with a fantastic view of the island.
7. mirador de Cherfe, Tenerife
From the Mirador de Cherfe vantage point, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire western part of Tenerife on one side, and a first-class view of Mount Teide, Spain's highest mountain, on the other. The viewing angle of the Teide is unusual, as it is rarely seen in photographs from its western side. In front of the volcano are Mount Chinyero and the valley of Santiago, followed further back by the steep slopes of the Teno mountains and the village of Masca.
8. Mirador Del Río, Lanzarote
The Mirador del Río in the north of Lanzarote is a true work of art, built on an impressive cliff. Looking north, you can see three small islands in the distance, including La Graciosa with its perfect volcanic cones. The visitor centre of the Mirador del Rio was designed by the famous artist César Manrique, who mainly worked with volcanic stone from the surrounding area.
9. Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma
On the highest point of the island of La Palma, at an altitude of 2,400 meters, is the Mirador del Roque de los Muchachos, which is considered one of the best places for stargazing in the world. Like the Mirador de la Cumbrecita, the volcanic caldera Caldera de Taburiente lies at the feet of this viewpoint. The gigantic crater is up to one and a half kilometres deep and covered all around by forests and bizarre rock formations. At night, the stars in the sky sparkle brighter here than anywhere else.
10. Pico de las Nieves, Gran Canaria
The Pico de las Nieves viewpoint in the centre of Gran Canaria is the highest point on the entire island at 1,949 metres and offers an unobstructed view of the surrounding biosphere reserve with its countless valleys and jagged rocks. Because of its height, the Pico de las Nieves shines with a great view even on cloudy days.
