Unbound Collection by Hyatt

First hotel of the new brand opens in Germany

11 November 2020

The Hyatt Hotels Corporation announced the opening of Hyatt's newest luxury boutique hotel in Düsseldorf in early November: The Wellem in Düsseldorf opens as the first Unbound Collection by Hyatt hotel in Germany. Previously operating under the Hyatt House brand, the 102-studio and suite hotel is located in the heart of the Andreas Quartier, within walking distance of the famous Königsallee and the Rhine. The opening of The Wellem marks the launch of Hyatt's The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand in the German-speaking market and also marks the seventh hotel in the collection to open in Europe. Despite another lockdown, the property is opening as planned following the rebranding, in accordance with applicable guidelines initially for business guests only. With The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, guests will have the opportunity to create their own unique experiences at special hotels around the world: be it the historic jewel in the heart of Paris like the Hôtel du Louvre or a spectacular architectural monument like the Párisi Udvar Hotel Budapest. Other hotels of the brand in Europe are the Hôtel Martinez in Cannes, the Hôtel du Palais Biarritz or even the Great Scotland Yard Hotel in London.

Between art and culture: the legacy of Jan Wellem

The property is named after Jan Wellem, who, together with his wife Anna Maria Luisa of the House of Medici, was instrumental in making Düsseldorf an important centre for culture and the fine arts. As a tribute to its namesake, The Wellem houses an impressive collection of contemporary art on display throughout the building and suites. This includes works by internationally renowned artists such as Jeff Koons, HA Schult and Julian Schnabel. Guests also have the option of being accompanied exclusively by a private Art Concierge, who will introduce them to the individual works of art and also advise them on their purchase. The Art Concierge will also offer guided tours of nearby museums and art galleries, including the Kunstsammlung K20 and the Kunstakademie der Stadt Düsseldorf, once they reopen to visitors. "We are confident that we will soon be welcoming and delighting tourist guests in Düsseldorf again. We see the rebranding of our hotel to an Unbound Collection by Hyatt hotel as an investment in the future, which we already want to actively plan and shape today," explains General Manager Till Westheuser. "As the first property of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt in Germany, the hotel also offers the perfect setting for guests who place particular value on an exceptional and individual hotel experience. We look forward to our future guests writing their own stories here."

Historical design

Like every hotel of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, The Wellem reflects the individual history of its location and preserves its heritage. Built in 1913 in the neo-Baroque style, the palace was originally a courthouse and the seat of the former district and regional court of Düsseldorf. As such, it was also the setting for some significant historical events of the 20th century. Over the years, the listed Palace of Justice has been continuously restored and the original character of the building has been preserved. The design of The Wellem combines refined style with modern flair, combining the historic and modern sides of Düsseldorf. In The Wellem's 102 studios and suites, guests have access to the latest entertainment technology in the form of Bluetooth speakers and SuitePads, which also allow for easy communication with reception. Each room has a separate bedroom and living area. The exclusive 89-square-meter Terrace Art Suites on the fifth floor - each featuring original art by renowned artists - all have access to a private roof terrace.

Exclusive gastronomy offer

The hotel includes six F&B outlets located in the building itself and in the immediate vicinity. The variety ranges from Fine dining to homemade cakes and exclusive drinks. In MASH, for example, guests enjoy excellent steaks, in FRANK's restaurant selected dishes from the upscale cuisine are interpreted in a modern way and prepared with seasonal products from the region, and in the Mutter Ey Café homemade cakes are served. In the lobby bar, guests will also find the ideal location for social evenings in a stylish ambience, and with FRANK's Jazz Club, the hotel offers a true highlight for all those in search of extraordinary experiences.
