These are the best professions for travel fans

From au pair to diving instructor.

1 April 2021

Many of us spend the majority of our working lives working a 9-to-5 job, 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year. And much of that time is spent trying to fill the days until our next holiday or dreaming of a job that pays us to travel the world. With the following 8 professions, this daydream can soon become a reality.

Interpreter

Of course, you need to speak at least a second language to work as an interpreter. You can earn a living by working for a travel company that sells tours to tourists who speak your language, for example, or by paying companies to translate their websites. The possibilities really are endless. Alternatively, you could work as an interpreter for international government agencies, community organizations, or hospitals.

Geoscientist

Perhaps not one of the most obvious choices, but a great option if you are interested in the structure and formation of the Earth. Usually, a bachelor's degree in a relevant subject is required to enter this profession, but it will then take you to the most unusual places in the world. There, for example, you will investigate the causes of natural phenomena such as earthquakes and that too in the middle of nature. Your professional journey ranges from the volcanic landscape of Iceland to the mountains of South America.

Climate change, natural disasters, energy supply, water scarcity: geoscientists deal with the pressing problems of our time.

Au pair

If you like to be with children and live in a host family, au pair is the right job for you! Many agencies and specialized websites offer au-pair stays abroad. Nowadays, au-pairs are wanted in every age group and regardless of gender. Especially popular destinations are the USA, Australia, New Zealand, but also European countries such as Great Britain, France and Spain. But beware: many build such a strong connection to the country they are au-pairing in that they stay there for a long time or even forever.

Diving/Skiing Instructor

What travel lover has not dreamed of exploring the Great Barrier Reef? If you are physically fit and have the required certification, you can take seasonal jobs in many countries and consider the sun as your constant companion. The most popular destinations: Thailand, Australia, Caribbean and Egypt. Instructor in the summer at the sea and in the winter as a ski instructor in the Alps - sounds like a cliché, but is often a lifelong dream come true. As a ski instructor, you become one with nature and can also engage in sporting activities. For example in France, New Zealand or Switzerland.

Explore the underwater world, meet new people and earn money at the same time? As a diving instructor this is possible.

Tour guide

What better job than showing tourists the cities you love and sharing all your favourite sights, attractions and hidden gems with them? The good news is that there are no set requirements to become a tour guide - though you may need to apply for certification depending on the country you're working in. So, assuming you know the regions very well, you can guide holidaymakers through the winding streets in Italy, show guests the most beautiful beaches in France or present the most impressive sights in Greece.

Language teacher

What if you were to teach your native language abroad? Many language centers and cultural associations located in different countries often hire native teachers. If you are a student, you can also try going abroad as a language assistant at a secondary school. Teach the locals in Scotland a little more of your culture while immersing yourself in the Scottish way of life, or get a taste of the vibrant air in South America while teaching German - the possibilities seem endless!

The good news is that working as a tutor, aide or study leader can count as experience and for some companies that's all you need.

Foreign Correspondent

It is possible to live out the dream combination of writing, travelling and foreign languages in one profession. Namely as a foreign correspondent. In this profession, one of your main tasks is to travel to different countries in order to report on the spot about current topics of the respective country. The advantage of this job is not only to travel, but also to get to know the culture of the country better from different perspectives and to acquire in-depth knowledge of the country. Often foreign correspondents choose to work in France, Belgium, Sweden or the USA.

Humanitarian work

International aid organisations are always looking for qualified and, above all, passionate volunteers. There are different types of international volunteering that allow you to participate in solidarity projects around the world. However, the conditions of deployment are very different and often only basic needs such as accommodation and food are provided for volunteers. If you want to live out passion and solidarity in faraway countries, Africa, Indonesia and Nepal are particularly well suited for this.
