Maldives auction off 16 uninhabited islands

On one condition...

31 May 2021

Who doesn't dream of being able to sit on their own Island to relax and unwind? This dream could now actually come true for a few people because the Maldives are auctioning off a total of 16 uninhabited islands. With 170,000 euros you are already settled. However, there is one small condition!

How to buy your own island at an auction

Vacation-hungry people probably cannot believe their eyes, but it's really true! From now on there is the possibility to buy your own island in the Maldives by auction. The government of the luxurious holiday destination wants to boost tourism again. Whoever gets hold of one of the islands can lease the island for 50 years and live in paradise.

An uninhabited island with a size of about 1.2 hectares will need a capital of 210,000 dollars, the equivalent of about 173,000 euros. However, if you are aiming for a larger paradise, you can buy a 10.4-hectare island at the auction for around 1.2 million euros.

The catch

However, there is one thing you have to do if you buy one of the 16 islands at auction: tenants have to build a hotel with at least 100 beds on the island and take great care of the ecosystem as well as the vegetation. But if you keep in mind that you will have your own island for 50 years, this investment would be worth considering...

Those who would like to participate in the auction can still bid until 10 June at this Page. By the way, the islands do not go to the people who bid the most. The selection is made according to a special point system. There are 60 points for the highest offer, 20 additional points if one offers that at least 70 per cent of the employees in the hotel will be locals. Points can also be collected for a certain percentage of women and investments in the government's tourism fund.
