With Knives Out, Rian Johnson created a small masterpiece in 2019, starring former Bond hero Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc, a modern Sherlock Holmes with quite a bit of charm. The follow-up Glass Onion: A Knives out Mystery also promises to live up to the praise of critics and audiences alike – and features a star-studded ensemble cast.

What is the Knives Out sequel about?

The sequel, the rights to which were sold to Netflix in 2021 for a whopping 469 million US dollars, was already screened in select movie theaters this past fall and received stellar reviews across the board – from the direction and screenplay to the performances, the standout being Janelle Monáe as Andi Brand.

This time Benoit Blanc is headed to Greece, where he finds himself at the annual crime game party of billionaire Miles Bron at his estate in Greece, the "Glass Onion", and among illustrious guests. As in part one, the story takes a dark turn when a guest (Monáe) is shot dead. It's now up to Benoit to find out who – and why – she was murdered....

Where to watch

Glass Onion: A Knives out Mystery is now available to stream on Netflix. Those who have already seen it have probably wondered where the sunny movie was filmed.

Spetses, Greece

Among other locations, Glass Onion is set on the small island of Spetses in the Argolic Gulf. Those who have already visited the island will recognize the port of Dabia, where the characters gather to board the yacht that will take them to Miles Bron's private island. The venerable five-star Grand Hotel Poseidonon can also be seen in the background; the perfect accommodation for movie loving travelers.

Porto Heli, Greece

In the north of Spetses, on the Greek mainland in the Peloponnese, lies the high-end favorite Porto Heli, which served as the main filming location for Glass Onion. That's also where Miles Bron's luxurious villa is located: in reality, the "Glass Onion" is actually the sprawling Villa 20 of the renowned Aman Resorts.

Johnson was so taken with the modernist interpretation of classical Greek architecture that he decided to apply for a filming permit. And successfully so. The "Glass Onion" – the elaborate, namesake glass structure – was added during filming.

Belgrade, Serbia

Much of the interior footage was shot in Serbia. © Netflix

The Serbian capital itself is actually not part of the film. The crew only filmed there on an indoor stage, for settings such as the atrium of the grandiose villa. Movie buffs should nevertheless make a trip to Belgrade, as there's plenty to see in the White City.
