Portoroz is the ideal vacation destination if you look for an alternative to typical travel hot spots like Italy or Greece at the end of summer and want to soak up the sun one last time. The city convinces with beautiful beaches, hotels by the sea and a natural environment, where you can enjoy the peace and quiet. As a seaside resort and spa, Portoroz was already popular over a hundred years ago, when the coastline turned into one of the most prestigious resorts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

To this day, the coastline is known for its spa and luxury hotels, as well as beautiful and clean beaches. Gamblers can try their luck in one of the casinos of Portoroz, and spend their winnings right back on the shopping street on the beach. Tip: If you are less into casinos or shopping you can take an idyllic walk at sunset through the Sculpture Park Forma Viva south of the town. Works by 20th-century sculptors are displayed here among pine and olive trees. Admission is free.

South of Portoroz, time seems to stand still: Here you'll find impressive salt fields, where, today, salt is extracted from the sea just as it was centuries ago. In the charming bays, old sailing boats lie at anchor. Tip: at the Secovlje Salt Works there's also a museum where you can learn all about the history of salt extraction in Istria.
