Tunesia in Autumn: Highlights You Shouldn't Miss

Sunshine and pleasant temperatures aren't the only things that make a trip to Tunisia in fall unforgettable.

September 24, 2024

In spring and summer, Tunisia's beaches are mainly populated by people looking for a relaxing beach vacation. The North African country has as many as 140 beaches to offer. The most popular of these include Mahdia beach, Sidi Mahréz near Djerba and Chott Meriem. Temperatures drop in fall, but 30 degrees are still possible during the day until late October. This means you can sunbathe and splash around in the sea without the oppressive heat.

The temperatures are also perfect for sightseeing now. Overall, there's less going on, which of course means shorter waiting times, more space in restaurants and hotels and generally lower prices. If you plan a trip to Tunisia in fall, you should definitely put these activities on your bucket list:

Kitesurfing around Djerba

The huge shallow-water lagoon in the south-east of the largest North African island off the Tunisian mainland is considered the Mecca of kitesurfing. Easily accessible from Europe and particularly popular with beginners, professionals and beginners alike can be found here from April to October. The shallow water lagoon between the mainland and the island allows you to learn the sport or hone your technique in peace and quiet. There's also a kite center with good infrastructure, including showers and toilets. Numerous hotels on the island have specialized in catering to kite guests

A night full of stars

Camp Mars

If you can't get enough of stars, you can have them all in Tunisia. Camp Mars near Douz offers guests an accommodation under the clear starry skies of the desert. Guests sleep in comfortable tents equipped with washbasins, toilets and double beds. In the evening before going to bed, there's campfire romance and dune hikes, and at night, you get to see a sky spectacle. And you also get a free digital detox on top because a lack of reception prevents communication with the outside world. It's perfect for anyone who longs for silence, peace and quiet.

Experience Contrasts

As simple a night in the camp is, you can also experience a lot of luxury. Just think of the Anantara Sahara Tozeur, where you have the opportunity to enjoy the view of the desert while swimming in your own plunge pool. Or you can relax under palm trees in the middle of a lush oasis. The Radisson Blu with its Moorish-inspired architecture, the Four Seasons Hotel Tunis and The Residence Douz also offer opulent luxury. Traditional markets, such as those in Nabeul, Monastir and Sousse, form a charming contrast to the modern malls of Tunis. Fashionistas may also have Tunis Fashion Week (in September) on their radar.

Follow the Traces of Star Wars

Of course, the North African country has many sights to offer. For example, the medina of Sousse, the Musée National du Bardo, the amphitheater of El Djem, the ruins of Carthage and the artists' village of Sidi Bou Said are just some of the highlights. But even more fascinating are the seemingly unreal desert landscapes - many of which are familiar from Star Wars. The provider Star Wars Tours specializes in putting together tailor-made routes. They take you to iconic places such as Anakin's slave quarters, the Star Wars Canyon, Mos Espa, Tosche Station, Luke's birthplace and Chalmun's Cantina.

Tunis is home to numerous excellent restaurants and bars. Many of them offer cozy hangouts on rooftop terraces, from where you can enjoy great views of the medina at sunset. One example is Hotel Dar el Jeld. This is an upscale restaurant offering traditional brik and grilled seafood in a 15th century manor house. The ambience is particularly beautiful, which is why it is a popular meeting place for high society. If you travel to Tunisia in fall, you have a good chance of spotting them. After all, there are fewer tourists around then. And you are also more likely to secure a place in pole position.
