7 things that should not be missing on the Jordan bucket list

#1 Amman, Jordan Capital Experience

Located east of the Jordan River, Amman is one of the most modern and safest cities in Arabia. Amman oscillates between oriental-traditional flair and modernity; a visit combines the best of both worlds. In the citadel - the "little city" with the Temple of Hercules or the Umayyad palace Al-Qasr - as well as the Roman theater, one is abruptly transported back to the past. The modern side of Amman is revealed in downtown, when you sit with a cup of tea and enjoy fragrant flatbread.

#2 Trip to the legendary rock city of Petra

The "pink rock city" of Petra is one of Jordan's cultural highlights. As such, it has been named both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven (New) Wonders of the World. Reason enough, therefore, to pay a visit to the trading city, which is over 2,000 years old! The entrance gorge Al Siq is legendary for its luminous sandstone walls that rise up to 70 meters. After 1.5 km, Khazne al-Firaun reveals itself; movie fans know the tomb from "Indiana Jones". The Roman theater and the Ad-Deir monastery, a little off the trail, are also worth a visit. The best way to get there is by car from Aqaba.

#3 On Tour in the Grand Canyon of Jordan: Wadi Mujib National Park

It is the Grand Canyon of Jordan: Wadi Mujib or Mujib, the lowest national park in the world, is an impressive rocky gorge that flows into the Dead Sea. It stretches from 410 meters below sea level to 900 meters above sea level, reaching a drop of 1,300 meters. Wadi Mujib National Park is suitable for canyoning, impressive hikes and swimming excursions.

Tip: In the valley, hot healing springs promise relaxing hours after a long canyon hike.

#4 Dead Sea: a bath in the salt lake

The Dead Sea between Jordan, Israel and the West Bank is the lowest lake on the surface of the earth at 430 meters below sea level. The salinity is 33 %, making normal swimming impossible. Floating in the year-round warm water is not only a unique experience, it also has benefits for the skin: the salty water can help with neurodermatitis or psoriasis and is therefore popular for spa stays. Ideal starting points for a visit are the two towns of Numeira and Drha.

Tip: Those who go to the Dead Sea should drink enough and be sure to take bathing shoes. The shores are salty sharp, very hot and often slippery.

#5 Relaxing in the coastal city of Aqaba

An oasis in the desert landscape: Jordan's second largest city attracts visitors with a diverse cultural program as well as sporting experiences. Whether you wander through the ancient ruined city of Ayla or find yourself in the colorful souq alleys among dates, spices and jewelry - in Aqaba you will discover authentic Arabia. A special highlight are the palm-fringed beaches of the sandy beaches and the Red Sea: Aqaba is an absolute Diver's paradise and hotspot for all water sports, from surfing, water skiing and jet skiing to scuba diving.

#6 Cross the desert on camels

In autumn, when the temperatures are a bit more pleasant, you can set off into the wilderness on desert ships (e.g. to Wadi Rum): Jordan shows its most adventurous side when camel trekking with Bedouins. The caravan leads on one- to two-hour tours through rocky landscapes bathed in rich shades of red and gold. Full-day tours also offer overnight stays - a night under the canopy of stars in the desert remains unforgettable.

Tip: If you spend the night in the desert, you should dress warmly: After sunset, temperatures drop to as low as 6 °C.

#7 Sandboarding in Wadi Rum

In Jordan, people like to be sent into the desert: Wadi Rum, the country's largest wadi, fascinates with red sandstone and massive granite. Jeep tours through the "Valley of the Moon" are particularly popular: They take you past impressive canyons, colored stone bridges and unusual rock formations; among them, for example, Mushroom Rock, a giant porcini mushroom. In the evening, the Al Ghuroub viewing terrace invites you to watch the sun slowly bathe the desert in warm red hues.

Tip: Sandboarding in the desert - sand surfing - is a summer alternative to snowboarding. In Wadi Rum, sports enthusiasts can therefore get on a sandboard and glide down the rust-red dunes. This is possible at Wadi Rum Village, for example.
