f you’re planning to spend this summer at the beach and want to go somewhere that’s as photogenic as possible, you needn’t look further than Portugal. Thanks to its breathtaking coastal scenery the Algarve, which is both the westernmost and southernmost part of the country (the name Algarve comes from Arabic and means “the west”), has recently become the number one hotspot for travel-hungry sun worshippers: although it’s actually on the Atlantic, it boasts a Mediterranean climate that guarantees a generous daily dose of vitamin D.
Unspoiled Paradise for Golfers: Our Summer Hotspot Algarve
And yet the picturesque beaches are just the icing on the cake in a region that is idyllic through and through: healthy local food, charming little villages, vast expanses of virtually untouched countryside and ancient castles that give a deep insight into Portugal’s turbulent history make for a stay full of wide-ranging impressions and adventure. The Algarve is an absolute paradise for golfers too – it’s no coincidence that it’s one of Europe’s most attractive golf destinations and a magnet for avid players from all over the world. Many of the courses here were designed by famous golf architects, and besides being challenging and varied they offer plenty to please the eye as well.

The number of exclusive resorts, outstanding res- taurants and lively bars in the Algarve has increased considerably in recent years too. But as has always been the case, the majority of what makes life here so enjoy- able takes place outdoors, which is why summer dining often goes hand in hand with unrivalled views. And it goes without saying that there’s an abundance of freshly caught fish and seafood that comes straight out of the Atlantic and onto the plate. Be sure to try Cataplana de mariscos, a hearty mix of lobster, shrimp and everything the ocean has to offer, cooked in a delicious white wine and tomato sauce and flavoured with lots of fresh herbs. Summer tastes unbelievably good here ...
Good to Know

- The Algarve has an excellent rail network that connects the cities. There’s also a good bus service for more rural areas.
- Smaller towns like Tavira, Sagres and Carvoeiro give an authentic insight into local life in the Algarve.
