Spa Etiquette: 5 Dos and Don'ts at the Spa

There are few places more relaxing than a spa - but not every visit is a success. We reveal how to best prepare for your treatments, what you should bear in mind and whether (or how much) tipping is expected as appreciation.

1. Do: Playing with open cards

It's essential for a perfect result to discuss your wishes and goals with the therapists before each treatment. You should also mention any restrictions, such as pregnancy or medication, so that therapists can adapt their treatment accordingly. Important: You should also inform the staff about cosmetic procedures such as fillers or lasers before each treatment - especially if these have only recently been carried out, as this can otherwise lead to irritations.

2. Don't: Cosmetics and perfume

Who doesn't like to smell good? However, what is good manners in everyday life can be very annoying for others in a spa. Especially in saunas and steam baths, a perfume (no matter how fine!) can have an irritating or penetrating effect on other people seeking relaxation. You should also cleanse your face before visiting the spa to remove any make-up - this saves time and effort during a facial treatment.

3. Do: Be involved and take initiative

If you feel uncomfortable during the treatment, it's better to address this immediately and communicate any requests to make changes. If you are asked which product you prefer for your treatment, it's advisable to ask what effect can be achieved - and to choose a fragrance that you like.

4. Don't: Cure a hangover at the spa

Who hasn't struggled with a hangover after a night out? A visit to the spa sounds like the perfect remedy. Wrong! The body needs 24 hours to eliminate alcohol, so toxins can pass through the body too quickly during a massage and even worsen the symptoms of a hangover. The same applies when you are ill.

5. Do: Show your gratitude with a tip

It's not always expected (other countries, other customs), but therapists are generally happy to receive tips, especially if you have enjoyed your treatment. Ten to 20 percent is a reasonable amount everywhere.
