Sneak Preview: This is What the Cruise Ship of the Future Could Look Like

An aerodynamic design, sustainable propulsion - the cruise of the day after tomorrow must be one thing above all: climate-neutral. Here's the first model showing a cruise ship of the future.

April 21, 2023

Does the future of travel lie on the water? As climate change continues to advance, the tourism industry has been confronted with challenges for several years. Offers should be almost climate-neutral, and environmental pollution, exploitation and overtourism should be reduced to a minimum. One area that's probably developing the most in this respect is cruise travel. The world's best-known and largest shipyard, MEYER WERFT in Papenburg in northern Germany, has now dared to take a look into the year 2100 and presented a concept. Is this what a cruise ship of the day after tomorrow will look like?

Reading tip: Why luxury cruises are trending again in 2023

A whale-like silhouette

If you want to build progressively, you have to understand the laws of nature. That's why the Reverse model, which was now unveiled at the International Cruise Show in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, comes with an aerodynamic design. The whale-like silhouette is curved, lowered at the bow and stern and kept neutral in color. "The ship is based on global megatrends and is one - but not the only - logical response to them," knows Tim Krug, head of MEYER Group's Concept Development Group. The closed glass facade not only looks classy, but also offers a breathtaking all-round view. Urban gardening areas and drone landing pads round off the exterior design. The interior is based on a modular cabin structure that's flexible and can be modified independently of the outer shell.

Are pills the culinary future?

The culinary aspect of the future model is particularly exciting: "We have only provided for small restaurant areas that serve more as social meeting places, because we imagine that a large proportion of the nutrients will be ingested in concentrated form like pills," says Krug. So will humanity completely forgo pleasure and palate in 2100? It's unclear...

No fossil fuels

What the model does prove, however, is that the cruise ship of the day after tomorrow can operate completely without fossil fuels. Reverse relies on the use of wave energy, which is achieved by horizontal wings on the hull. Energy is also generated by the airstream. Solar and fuel cells round off the concept.

In addition, Reverse has already been made from 90 percent sustainable materials that can be recycled without leaving any residue, he said.

When it comes to the future, MEYER WERFT in Papenburg is way ahead of the industry. With the Silver Nova for Silversea Cruises, the shipbuilding company will complete a new cruise ship that is groundbreaking in technology and design as early as 2023. The ships of Disney Cruise Line, Costa Crociere, Saga Cruises, TUI, AIDA and Co. were also built at MEYER WERFT.
