Bluebird Backcountry Colorado: the ski resort without lifts
The US state of Colorado is home to the first ski resort without lifts in the USA. Sounds exhausting? In reality it's cool, sustainable and popular.
2 December 2021
There are no ski lifts. You look for snowcats in vain. Snow cannons? Not a chance. When Bluebird Backcountry opened for a test season last year as the first new ski area in Colorado in 15 years, you looked in vain for lifts and technology familiar from other ski areas. But the operators hadn't run out of money - quite the opposite, in fact. Rather, they wanted to bring the essence of skiing back to winter sports enthusiasts. And help them to have a real backcountry experience.

Into perhaps the most sustainable ski resort ever
The guests of the test season were thrilled. In fact, here needing to master the ascent with pure muscle power doesn't bother anyone. Once you get to the top, you're rewarded with a beautiful view and untracked slopes. Bluebird Backcountry is located on a total of 600 hectares of terrain around Bear Mountain in the Rocky Mountains and is completely natural. So downhill is the way to go. Ski and snowboard enthusiasts enjoy wide open spaces covered in ancient aspen trees. Or navigate through challenging terrain interspersed with dense brush. The compulsory part - the climb - serves as an ideal workout and warm-up. And the freestyle descent finally provides an intoxicating cocktail of endorphins and adrenaline.
Skiing area without lifts, fun on the slopes with safety
But ski lifts, snowcats and snow cannons are the only things winter sports enthusiasts have to do without in the Bluebird Backcountry. The region already offers other features of traditional ski resorts. There's a base lodge with equipment rentals, food, campfires, restrooms, a ski patrol and ski schools. There is also a campground. Even those who have never climbed a mountain with skins on their skis before will be right at home at this ski resort. After all, it boasts of being not only perhaps the most sustainable ski resort in the US but definitely also the friendliest. In courses for different skill levels, beginners and experts can perfect their backcountry technique or learn all about avalanches and dangers on the slopes.
The guests love it, meanwhile a Bluebird Community which warmly welcomes every newcomer has formed. To ensure that the fun on the slopes continues away from the crowds, the tickets available per day are strictly limited. Simple accommodations are available in the immediate vicinity. The famous ski resort of Aspen and legendary Denver are both just over two hours away by car and offer a wider choice of hotels and resorts.
