Qatar is a strictly Muslim country. Accordingly, it has many cultural attractions to offer. For example, the Museum of Islamic Art, the futuristic Qatar National Museum and the Katara Cultural Village. If you're interested, you can immerse yourself in Islamic art and history here. A visit to a traditional market gives you the opportunity to discover local products and lots of handicrafts. One recommendation in this regard is the Souq Waqif . Here, you can buy spices, clothes and souvenirs. It's located in the center of the capital Doha.

Anyone traveling to Qatar with an open mind will be amazed. In addition to traditional Moorish buildings, there are also plenty of futuristic buildings to admire. Doha's skyline, for example, is dominated by modern skyscrapers. Aspire Tower and Qatar National Library are also considered architectural masterpieces. Even from the outside, the museums are worth marveling at. For example, the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) was built on an island right next to the promenade. The architecture was designed by I. M. Pei, a Pritzker Prize winner. The National Museum of Qatar (above) is also designed by a Pritzker Prize winner (Jean Nouvel). Inspiration came from a desert flower.

If you prefer modern shopping, head to one of Doha's wonderful and family-friendly shopping malls. They offer a wide range of high-street and luxury brands from all over the world. There are also numerous cafés, restaurants, supermarkets, cinemas, live entertainment and even ski slopes. The latest attraction in this regard is Place Vendôme. Housed in a palatial building complete with a huge fountain and over one million square meters of retail space, the mall is home to 560 different stores and two luxurious hotels.

Focus on sustainability

A lot can thrive in a desert state - as the numerous farms in the region prove. Sustainability is also becoming increasingly important in this country. On a trip to Qatar, you can visit Heenat Salma Farm to see for yourself how agriculture can work under desert conditions. Al Sawfa Farm also cultivates organically and as sustainably as possible. You'll find another example in Agrico, 58 km outside Doha. This is the most sophisticated hydroponic agriculture in the country.
