City of Angels

Los Angeles, the city of angels – and cars. If you think you can casually stroll around here, you'll quickly out yourself as a clueless European. In L.A., people drive, chugging along the famous Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills with its exclusive boutiques as if they had all the time in the world. Just enjoy and let the famous scenery you've seen in countless movies and shows pass you by.

It's all about the journey. You go to L.A. to see and be seen. It's more than just a city, it's a way of life. The birthplace of the movie industry is home to stars like Angelina Jolie, Leonardo DiCaprio and Gwyneth Paltrow. Nowhere else can you sight this many celebrities while simply going for coffee.

The number of sunny days is high, promoting a deeply relaxed attitude. On the other hand, an active lifestyle is as much a part of L.A. as its famous beaches, where beach boys and girls show off their tanned skin or ambitiously work on perfecting their bodies (Venice Beach is considered a six-pack El Dorado). But L.A. is also a city of museums: The Broad is a private museum for contemporary art and, as a building, a work of art in its own right; Downtown L.A. is home to hip restaurants, but also Frank Gehry's elegantly curved Walt Disney Concert Hall.

A photo in front of the famous Hollywood sign is mandatory, as is a trip to Runyon Canyon (with the Griffith Observatory) – a recreational paradise that offers breathtaking views of the city's imposing skyline. From up here, you get a sense of the desert landscape that characterizes this area.

Be sure to also take a trip to Malibu, known for its celebrity villas and impressive waves on the beach; Miley Cyrus even dedicated a song to the seaside retreat. Considering the predominantly healthy lifestyle, you should also treat yourself to a a food legend to balance the scales: Pink's Hot Dogs has been around since 1939, with photos of various celebrities on its walls. But amid this ambience, you might just feel like a character in a gaudy 1960s comedy yourself...
