La Palma: This island is the perfect place for stargazing

A cosmic spectacle not to be missed: the starry sky of La Palma, which is particularly impressive at the moment!

20 August 2021

Hardly any place has such a beautiful starry sky as the Canary Island La Palma. Those who holiday here experience a breathtaking sky spectacle every evening; especially from July to August!

Incomparable starry sky

The island of La Palma is now world famous for its starry sky. Because in the altitudes of mostly over 2,000 meters you are literally as close to the sky as hardly anywhere else. For this reason, a special "sky law" was passed in 1988. On the one hand, it prohibits air traffic over the island, but on the other hand, it also prescribes certain street lighting. Fortunately, because of these regulations, the starry sky appears untouched and breathtakingly clear. Those who have always dreamed of stargazing and long for shooting stars are exactly right here.

Especially in the period from July 17 to August 24, shooting stars are particularly frequent and can even be seen at regular intervals. So if you still have a few wishes open, you can send them to many shooting stars.

Stargazing all over the island

On La Palma the stars accompany tourists almost everywhere. Starting with the numerous vantage points and signposted hotspots for stargazing, to the hotel's own telescopes, everything is under the sign of the sky, not just at night. UNESCO also saw it that way and officially made La Palma the first Starlight Reserve in the world in 2012.

Star Observatory La Palma

Especially recommendable by the way is the Observatory Roque de los Muchachos. The observatory is located at the highest point of the island and thus offers a perfect and above all undisturbed view. Those who are particularly interested in stars will also find the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, one of the world's leading centres for astronomical research, at the Roque de los Muchachos observatory. International scientists research here at any time of the day or night for the latest findings in the field of astrophysics.

But also for everyone else the observatory is the perfect place to watch shooting stars, meteor showers or just the peaceful night sky. The panoramic view also provides a unique view of La Palma. Don't forget your camera, because you'll want to capture these moments forever. Such a dark and clear night sky and so many different star constellations are seldom seen in life.
