No other region in Italy lends itself so well to a road trip as the fantastically unspoiled Apulia. Here, whitewashed houses tower over the cliffs, while lush olive groves adorn the interior and the clock ticks a little slower. Whether you want to follow famous attractions, make a pilgrimage from beach to beach or simply follow your nose: the heel of the boot guarantees a magical summer.

The capital Bari is the perfect starting point, as it is not only ideal for arriving and strolling around. It's also located directly on the Adriatic Sea and immediately exudes that southern Italian vacation feeling. Alternatively, you can also arrive by plane via Brindisi and start your journey of discovery in the south of the region. There are plenty of car rental companies everywhere - the offer is varied and inexpensive, and the infrastructure is very well developed. Traveling around Puglia by car is particularly relaxed in summer. The further south you drive, the emptier the roads become. You're also rewarded with idyllic panoramic views, and even the highways are adorned with pink blooming oleander.

Land of the sun and the sea

If you dream of a typical southern Italian summer, you'll lose your heart in Puglia. Sun worshippers can look forward to glorious days and extensive beaches to suit every taste. The eastern coast along the deep blue Adriatic Sea with its rocky bays is a paradise for cliff divers. Meanwhile, the western side along the Ionian Sea offers fine white beaches and turquoise waters. And there's also more than enough to discover for culture-loving travelers. World-famous and almost synonymous with Puglia are the trulli, the round houses with pointed roofs, which can be admired above all in Alberobello.

Although, they have long since ceased to be insider tips, Ostuni, the white city, and Polignano a Mare are at the top of the list of must-sees. The tip of the heel scores with picturesque coastal towns such as Gallipoli and Otranto, as well as the baroque jewel of Lecce in the interior. The road trip is particularly worthwhile for foodies. Apulian cuisine, which draws its strength from simplicity, is one of the best in Italy. The local bread, succulent focaccia and fabulous panzerotti are absolutely delicious. But it's especially the handmade pasta (don't miss the orecchiette with turnip tops!) that's also an absolute dream.
