Even in Roman and Etruscan times, the Maremma - the marshy coastal region in southern Tuscany and northern Lazio - was a refuge for relaxation and regeneration with its hot springs. Even today, nature lovers still appreciate the wellness highlight of central Italy. Here, you can immerse yourself in the open air, bathe in the thermal water and wash away the stress of everyday life.

The most famous springs in the Maremma are undoubtedly those in Saturnia, which are among the oldest thermal springs in Italy. Hidden in the hills and surrounded by cypresses and willows, the white limestone water cascades over the round natural baths, which have been formed over thousands of years by lime deposits. The nightly full moon bath is particularly popular, with guests coming from all over the region every month.

If the public springs are a little too rustic for you, we recommend the nearby luxury hotel “Terme di Saturnia”. Located directly at the source of the spring, you can enjoy the healing effects combined with all the benefits of a top resort. In addition to Saturnia, the Bagni di Petriolo and the Bagni San Filippo are also worth a visit. The latter were also the preferred resort of Lorenzo the Magnificent from the Medici dynasty. Other members of the dynasty also liked to go on holiday here.

Away from the thermal springs, the Maremma is a fascinating region with its very own culture. This is deeply rooted in agriculture and is characterized not least by the Maremman cattle and the butteri maremmani - Italian cowboys whose tradition dates back to ancient times and who still herd the semi-wild cattle today.

The connection to nature is also evident in the local viticulture, producing numerous high-quality wines. The towns of the Maremma, such as Grosseto and Pitigliano, also offer exciting insights into medieval Italy.
