"I originally wanted to become a painter, but I failed the entrance exam and was instead placed in the sculpture program," Erwin Wurm once explained. "Well, that's a good thing!" one might be tempted to say—because that decision laid the foundation for a stellar international career. Wurm is one of the most successful contemporary artists, and his work explores the relationship between sculpture and the social. For instance, a lavish luxury car like the "Fat Car" can become a symbol of greed and excess. His exhibitions take the 70-year-old around the globe. In an interview, he shared where he likes to go.

What's your favorite travel destination?
I prefer to go to Venice and Hydra because I live there too and enjoy it. It's like a trip home.

Which other countries or cities inspire you?
The big cities. Leading our culture: Paris, London or New York - but also Shanghai or Tokyo and Seoul.

What was an unforgettable sight for you while traveling?
A photo safari in Kenya was simply incredible. I was also impressed by India, Rajasthan. There, I drove around various cities, Udaipur, Jaipur and so on. And Myanmar, then still Burma, long before it was even possible - that must have been 25 years ago.

Where will your next trip take you?
Venice, where I have an exhibition. Then to Aspen, where I'm also exhibiting. I almost only travel to exhibition venues now!

Which hotel do you like to return to?
I love staying at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Bangkok. It was actually my favorite hotel for many years.

Where do you find the best combination of art and hotel?
The "W South Beach" in Miami immediately comes to mind. It has incredible art.

What's on your bucket list?
Definitely not diving with dolphins. I don't want to see gorillas either. I find that rather vulgar; they should be left alone. You shouldn't look at the disintegrating icebergs either - that's pornography, modern pornography, I don't want that. I prefer a cozy weekend. Maybe in Tuscany or Burgundy with good wines - sounds boring, doesn't it?

What do you think no suitcase should be without?
My Kindle. So I have my library with me.

A movie whose setting made you want to travel?
Funnily enough, "Out of Africa" - but there are many others.

Is there a favorite dish and if so, in which restaurant?
The fish on Hydra is so good, it's wonderful! Red snapper at "Omilos" on Hydra - which is run by an Austrian, by the way.

What's your ultimate tip for a relaxing trip?
Massage - preferably Shiatsu.
