Insider tips for series fans: These are the 10 most beautiful filming locations
From the lush green hills of the Scottish Highlands to the turquoise blue shores of Malta, anyone who visits the filming locations of "Outlander," "Game Of Thrones" or "Vikings" will be rewarded with TV nostalgia, breathtaking landscapes and unique architecture.

#1 Scotland: Filming location for "Outlander"

The series version of Diana Gabaldon's Highland action romance "Outlander" has created a little Scottish hype in recent years. This is by no means only due to the love story between Claire and Jamie - the grandiose landscape and the charm of the Scots have also appealed to fans.
Although "Castle Leoch" and "Craigh na Dun" are the product of Gabaldon's imagination, the locations can still be visited. Fans will find the fictional "Castle Leoch" in Doune Castle near Stirling.

Claire's herb garden can be found in Culross in the county of Fife - and Jack Randall's fearsome "Fort William" is actually Blackness Castle, a 15th-century castle in the shape of a ship. Also a must: a visit to the Scottish Highlands, where the film was shot in Glencoe, among other places.

True fans will be drawn to the Covenanter Hotel in the dreamy town of Falkland in Fife, where Claire and Frank are also staying.

#2 England: Filming location for "Downton Abbey"

Nobility in upheaval: In the British series "Downton Abbey" everything revolves around the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants. According to the script, the rousing TV drama is set in Yorkshire in the fictional town of Downton. However, it was filmed in Hampshire.About an hour from London Highclere Castle is located, in and around which the series events take place.

The Victorian mansion is open to visitors and offers High Tea in the castle café. Further scenes were set in Bampton in the Cotswolds filmed in Oxfordshire - the visit quickly transports you into the world of Lady Violet and Co.

The Amazon Fantasy Series "The wheel of time" with James Bond star Rosamunde Pike was shot mainly in Eastern Europe. The was mainly set in the Czech Republic, Slovenia - in the town of Bovec and the village of Soca - and Croatia. As with Game of Thrones, the city Dubrovnik, the "Pearl of the Adriatic", in southern Croatia serves as an impressive backdrop.

No wonder: the narrow streets take you back to times long past and a view over the famous city walls with their towers and bastions reveals the blue expanses of the Mediterranean.

The visually stunning saga "Vikings" about the rise of the legendary Viking king Ragnar Lothbrok is based on historical events and is set in Norway, in the fictional town of Kattegatt. Nearly all the filming locations of the Viking series are close together on the "Emerald Isle".

In the Wicklow National Park, south of Dublin, fans will always come across familiar things, such as the Powerscourt Waterfall. The fictitious "Kategatt" was filmed on Lough Tay , which can be explored while hiking. Speaking of which, the Wicklow Way filming location is perfect for long walks.

#5 Austria: Filming location for "Bergdoktor"

In the TV series "Mountain Doctor" with Hans Sigl as Dr. Martin Gruber, the focus is on Austria, or more precisely the Wilder Kaiser region in Tyrol. Here, all the locations of the charming medical series can be visited: The house of the doctor and his family, the Gruberhof, for example - the building is in fact the beautiful Köpfinghof at the Söller Bromberg.

Taking place in Faistenbichl in Ellmau, the Hinterschnabl farm acts as a doctor's office. The "Wilder Kaiser" inn is filmed in two locations: outside in a private farmhouse in Going, inside in the Föhrenhof in Auwald in Ellmau.

#6 South Carolina: "Outer Banks" filming location

Around a dangerous treasure hunt, forbidden love affairs and family conflicts Netflix spins the story of "Outer Banks". The "Pogues" run their fictional town "Kildare" on the island chain "Outer Banks" off North Carolina in the USA. Due to difficulties with filming permits in NC, see "Bathroom Bill", the coming-of-age story had to be filmed in South Carolina, around Charleston. For series tourists, the coastal area has a lot to offer.

Fans can visit Shem Creek, Mount Pleasant, Charleston Harbor or on Morris Island to see the lighthouse in the settings of "Outer Banks".

"And Just Like That" also features Carrie Bradshaw in her iconic New York City apartment.
"Sex and The City", filmed from 1998 to 2004, is still one of the most successful series worldwide. With the Continuation "And Just Like That" Carrie and co. celebrated a great comeback in 2021 - but the original is and remains a beloved cult classic. Fans therefore still like to bite into the Big Apple today.

The most popular gang of crooks in the world of series has triggered a real hype. No wonder, because the coups of the thieves in the Dalí masks have a lot of style. The filming locations of "House of money" are mainly located in Spain; one more reason to fly to the Iberian Peninsula.

As a backdrop for the "Casa de Toledo", headquarters in season 1, serves the Finca El Gasco in Torrelodones in Madrid. For the monastery from season 4 took the Ermita de San Frutos in the Spanish capital in front of the lens, the interior shots were taken in the farmhouse Abadía de Santa María Real de Párraces in Segovia. And on the Plaza de Callao in Madrid it was raining banknotes.

#9 Germany: Filming location for "Dark"

"Dark"or "Dunkel" is the first Netflix series to be produced and shot entirely in Germany. The story revolves around the small town of Winden, time travel and intricate family connections, filmed in Berlin, Brandenburg and Resin .

Series fans will find the gloomy Winden Caves in the Unicorn Cave in Scharzfeld in the Harz Mountains, the "Waldhotel Winden" in the Castle hotel in Grunewald. "Dark" highlights are the Wooden church at the southwest churchyard Stahnsdorf as well as the Chemical plant Rüdersdorf. The concrete skeleton near Berlin with its eerie post-apocalyptic ambience is more than worth the visit.

#10 Malta: Filming location for "Game of Thrones"

"Game of Thrones", the cult series of the last decade, was filmed in numerous locations around the globe. Among others also on the Mediterranean island Malta. There you discover, at the Azure Window in Gozo, the wedding location of Daenerys and Khal Drogo. The natural rock arch unfortunately collapsed in 2017, but the view of the azure sea is still worth it.

One passes through the entrance to King's Landing at Mdina, at the Pjazza of the Mesquita one passes Littlefingers brothel. And in the basilica St. Dominic in Rabat you're on the trail of Ned Stark and Cersei. Dreamlike!
