Bernina Express: Highest railway line above the Alps
Thanks to the extra-large panoramic windows of the Express, passengers can marvel at the Graubünden mountains, among other things, as if on a screen during the journey. The approximately four-and-a-half-hour journey offers a variety of different natural spectacles and landscapes. When the train departs Chur, the cityscape gives way to green hilly landscapes. Small villages and numerous castles accentuate the landscape.
So if you've always wanted to discover the Swiss landscapes but haven't yet found the time, you should definitely plan a trip on the Bernina Express. The route runs, among other things, through the dark Schin Gorge into the Albula Valley. If you look out of the window here, you will discover wild mountain streams and imposing engineering structures such as the Solis and Landwasser Viaducts. After passing through the Albula tunnel, the Engadine can be admired. Afterwards, the Express gains altitude. The train climbs up the Bernina Pass, past the glaciers of the Bernina massif. At Ospizio Bernina, the train reaches an altitude of 2,253 metres.
Over mountain and lake
From Ospizio Bernina, passengers enjoy views of the glistening turquoise Lago Bianco and the shimmering dark Lej Nair. Alp Grüm is also part of the route. There, the Palü glacier, the Bernina Group and the Puschlav can be admired.
The route then descends into the valley in several loops. After the high mountains, a good hour and a half later, guests find themselves in Tirano. Once in the Italian town, visitors can expect Mediterranean flair and impressive scenery. Incidentally, those who embark on the journey with the Bernina Express will receive not only a feast for the eyes but also for the palate exclusively until 28 February 2022. Passengers will be served Italian specialities at the Tirano transfer point.
