January 15, 2024
Whether you eat strictly cruelty-free or only occasionally indulge in plant-based cuisine, it's fortunately becoming easier and easier to find restaurants to suit all preferences. Vegans in London don't have to look far. Because you can find excellent cuisine on pretty much every corner. There are now over 400 restaurants serving plant-based cuisine. But which are the best of their kind? Which hotspots for vegans in London should definitely be on your bucket list?
Pied à Terre

What David Moore has achieved with his restaurant in Fitzrovia is - to put it mildly - remarkable. The Irishman opened his restaurant in 1991 and was soon awarded a Michelin star by chef Richard Neat. Although Pied à Terre was even able to boast two stars in the meantime, it has "only" had one again since 2011. Whether with one or two stars, this hotspot for vegans is the oldest Michelin-starred restaurant in the UK. For some time now, Asimakis Chaniotis has been working behind the stove. He creates classic French cuisine with a nod to his native Greece. The menu features vegan and omnivorous delicacies, served à la carte or as a 4-, 6-, 8- and 10-course menu. It's open for lunch and dinner.

Roasted fennel with orange and maple syrup glaze and smoked dressing and buckwheat, celeriac dauphinois or butternut squash rose - dishes like these will make pretty much all foodies go into raptures. You don't even have to be vegan. This is also the view of the Michelin Guide, which recommends Gauthier. The menu has been completely vegan since 2021 and falls into the contemporary French category. Chef Alexis Gauthier learned from the best of the best, such as Alain Ducasse. During his time as Head Chef at Roussilon Pimlico he earned himself a star.

It took Jason Atherton's restaurant just six months to earn its Michelin star. But that was just the beginning. Numerous other awards followed. And rightly so! The setting is cozy and the ingredients for the menus are carefully selected. They come from farmers and producers from all over the country. The menu is not purely plant-based per se. But vegans in London should take a look anyway, as there are special vegan and vegetarian tasting menus. They include delicacies such as baked Roskoff onion, citrus parfait or celeriac in walnut oil.

Mallow
Mallow
The Mallow at Borough Market is more unconventional and much cozier. The team serves a wonderful mix of classic European cuisine - think brunch with porridge, pancakes and French toast - and international influences in its pretty restaurant (wooden floor, rust-red walls, pendant lights). The dishes are creative, colorful and not only beautiful to look at - they also taste absolutely fantastic. The ingredients also ensure this. They come from nearby surroundings and are cooked using a zero-waste approach. There's a second branch at Canary Wharf.

This hotspot for vegans in London differs from the ones mentioned above because it works with substitute products such as vegan cheese or Beyond Meat Patties. The result is probably the most delicious vegan burgers in the entire city. This is no coincidence, as the recipe is the result of intensive research by owners Rachel Hugh and Neil Potts. They crowdfunded their first restaurant and there are now Vurger branches not only in Shoreditch, but also in Manchester and Brighton. The menu includes classics such as Ranch Chicken, Double SmashCheeze Melt, bowls and wraps, shakes and fries.
