If you ask travelers about the best city for breakfast in Europe, you'll probably hear Vienna, Paris or London first. This isn't surprising, after all, the coffee house tradition of these cities is known beyond national borders. The number of bakeries there also seems to be high for those who like to go out for breakfast. But the online tour operator weloveholidays has now gone one step further. It created a comprehensive ranking for which it analyzed six factors and a huge amount of data. Among other things, they assessed the number of bakeries, breakfast restaurants, coffee and tea rooms that had at least a four-star rating. Added to this was the price for a cappuccino. Here's the astonishing result:
5: Istanbul, Turkey
Bakeries: 107
Cafés with breakfast: 1,688
Cafés: 398
Coffee price: € 2.25

Coffee culture came to Central Europe via Turkey. So it's no wonder that Turkish coffee and freshly brewed tea are part of a good start to the day here. In many families, the first meal of the day is even a kind of cultural institution. Typically, people eat simits (sesame rings), olives, cheese, tomatoes and cucumber as well as spreads. Here, they eat tahini or jam, for example. If the daily schedule allows, people like to take their time for a proper breakfast. In the overall ranking, Istanbul was able to secure place 5 with 1.9 out of a total of 4 points.
4: Paris, France
Bakeries: 287
Cafés with breakfast: 2,482
Cafés: 210
Coffee price: € 4.03

A typical breakfast in Paris is on the sweeter side. Think wonderfully fluffy croissants, jam, madeleines and pain au chocolat. But the crispy baguette is also a must on any well-laid French breakfast table. Whether you go to a café or eat at home, the French don't take much time for their petit-déjeuner. However, if you want to go out for breakfast on vacation, it's a different story. Then you should relax and grab a newspaper or watch the typical coffee house hustle and bustle before moving on. In the overall ranking, Paris scored 2,076 points out of 4.

It doesn't matter whether you choose the sweet or savory breakfast option. Both can be delicious and quite hearty. You'll typically find toast with grated tomato, olive oil and Serrano ham on one side and churros (often dipped in chocolate) or Magdalenas on the other side of the menu. The drink of choice is a café con leche or orange juice. Breakfast tends to be eaten later in Spain, usually not before 9 am. Barcelona achieved a total score of 2.101 in the ranking.
2: Milan, Italy
Bakeries: 197
Cafés with breakfast: 1,237
Cafés: 323
Coffee price: € 1.92

Typical Italians tend to attach little importance to breakfast. It usually has to be quick and is often eaten standing up on the way to work. It's therefore all the more surprising that two major Italian cities are at the top of the breakfast rankings. The reason behind it lies in the high number of cafés serving breakfast. How extensively the locals eat breakfast was not surveyed in the ranking nor how plentiful the offer in the cafés is. In any case, travelers can take as much time as they want. Milan scored 2.129 points.
1: Rome, Italy
Bakeries: 240
Cafés with breakfast: 1,660
Cafés: 394
Coffee price: € 1.50

Extremely reasonable prices for always good and generally very good coffee are an argument for going for breakfast in Rome. There are also Italian breakfast basics such as cornetto (croissant) with espresso, panettone or brioches with jam or nutella. The locals don't make a fuss about the first meal of the day. Travelers looking for a sumptuous breakfast have to make an effort. As a supplement to the small and usually sweet breakfast, you're more likely to enjoy filled panini, pizzette or foccacias. By the way: in Italy, you only order coffee with milk in the morning. Café latte and cappuccino have a break after lunch until the next day. In the afternoon, you only drink espresso!
