A spectacular coastline, a picturesque old town and glorious sunshine – no wonder Corfu is increasingly popular. Cobblestone alleyways and historic landmarks are set amidst an evergreen landscape, while the UNESCO-protected old town has been attracting visitors for decades. Goethe, Oscar Wilde, Lawrence Durrell and Henry Miller all found inspiration here and incorporated Corfu into their works.

The award-winning resort brand Domes has two paradisiacal hideaways here. Aside from the luxe Domes of Corfu, Domes Miramare beckons on the west side of the island: Surrounded by ancient olive groves, it has been one of the most stunning and exclusive spots on the island since the 1960s. It is far more than just a 5-star hotel – the legacy of Aristotle Onassis lives on here. With three award-winning restaurants, a private beach, a Soma Spa and four pools, this is a place of pure bliss.

The Onassis legacy

The resort is located just 30 minutes from the airport in the south-eastern part of the island, surrounded by unspoiled nature, tall trees and an enchanting seascape. Built in the 1960s by the Onassis family, Miramare has always been a retreat for heads of state, aristocrats and jet-setters. The King of Greece threw parties here and British music idols used the beach to relax between tours. Aristotle and Jackie Onassis, Maria Callas and President Eisenhower are just some of the luminaries who once graced the resort.

A Venetian olive grove has been here for five centuries, peacefully overlooking the glittering bay. The water reflects the mainland of Igoumenitsa and the mountains of Pindos, offering a colorful spectacle throughout the day. The 182 elegant suites and villas are held in cream and beige and feature a king-size bed or twin beds, an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower. Carefully selected artwork by local artists adorns the walls, while wood and marble complement the design. The brand new panoramic wing is located on a hill above the resort and offers a fantastic view of the Ionian Sea.

Greece for gourmets

Domes Miramare is home to some of the best restaurants in Corfu. For instance, the "1962 By the Sea", which presents some of the finer points of Corfiot cuisine, prepared with fresh, local and organic ingredients and combining tradition with current trends. The Makris Fine Dining Restaurant is the realm of award-winning chef Petros Dimas: his tasting menus are bursting with creativity and intense flavors, and the exquisite wine and champagne list is perfect for a special evening. The secret of this innovative cuisine lies in the use of the best mineral waters from Greece and artesian water from all over the world.

In addition to two pool bars, the casual, yet luxurious, "Blu Bar" stands out in particular. It was once a watering hole for royals and celebrities in the 1960s; today, Domes Miramare proudly relives the legend. Fascinating objects and a unique style create a harmonious ambience, while first-rate spirits, excellent wines and unique cocktails perfect the experience. The Raw Bar offers top-grade sushi - which tastes even better thanks to the breathtaking view of the sea. Prepared in an open kitchen by the in-house sushi chef, champagne and exquisite cocktails from the award-winning Apallou mixology team are also on offer.

However, the heart of the Miramare remains the brand-new SOMA Spa. The largest spa in the Domes Collection is a tribute to wellbeing, complete with state-of-the-art luxury, sensual lighting and therapeutic, soothing music. Designed in the style of an ancient Greek bath, it features beige marble and soaring arches, as well as an impressive, large indoor pool and four treatment rooms. Here, ancient Greek methods are combined with the latest healing techniques and effective products from ELEMIS, the British luxury spa and anti-aging skincare brand. This is complemented by a synergistic combination of active natural ingredients by CODAGE Paris and high-tech treatments by IS Clinical.

In the Green Gym, earth tones meet wooden floors made of bird's-eye maple, while designer ceramics with ferns and native plants produce oxygen. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer breathtaking views of the Ionian coast; however, the open-air gym goes one better: it allows for cardio and strength training in the great outdoors. All the necessary training equipment is available beneath shady trees, along with a fantastic view. Personal trainers are of course available by appointment.
