These are the best restaurants in Venice

Those who visit the lagoon city, for example during the course of the Biennale, can look forward to a feast for the senses, because these restaurants spoil you with outstanding culinary delights.

20 June 2022

Enjoyment is at the top of the priority list for locals and visitors alike in La Serenissima. Classic Italian cuisine is popular here, as it is throughout Italy, along with Venetian specialities. Cooking is simple but tasty, with fresh, high-quality ingredients from the surrounding area, such as shellfish, mussels and fish from the lagoon, but corn, rice and pulses from the Po Valley are also on the table. Through the trade, one focused on and introduced various spices early on in Venice , including pepper, cloves, and cinnamon - the oriental notes are still part of the local cuisine today.

Venice for Foodies: The must-try dishes

The Venetian evening usually begins with the tapas-like, typical appetizer Cicchetti with fish or meat. After that, things may get heartier: with the sweet and sour dish Sarde in Saòr, with Baccalà Mantecato, a Venetian-prepared cod, or the braised dish Peperonata. Squid, polpo, is also particularly popular and is used to colour pasta and rice black. For example as risotto nero. A must-try! Those who like it sweeter can look forward to Pinza with polenta, raisins and candied fruit or the fine Baicoli cookies - and of course outstanding gelato.

Tip:

Before leaving, amateur chefs should visit the Rialto Market and the Drogheria Mascari. Here you can find numerous local and regional products as well as specialities - a little Venetian pleasure for home.

5 top restaurants in Venice:

Trattoria Antiche Carampane

A real favourite among locals is Trattoria Antiche Carampane, a family-run eatery hidden between the Rialto fish market and Campo San Polo. It's worth wandering a bit through the charming alleys of the lagoon city to find this insider tip. Here you dine among the locals - there's classic Venetian cuisine in an authentic atmosphere, from carpaccio with freshly caught fish from the lagoon to prosciutto crudo and creamy baccalà to the typical black Venetian octopus with polenta. The restaurant is extremely popular, so you should book in advance!

Ristorante Quadrino

Anyone who has ever dined at Quadrino, with a direct view of lively St. Mark's Square, knows that celebrity chef Max Alajmo's cuisine alone is worth a visit to Venice. Contemporary reinterpretations of traditional dishes are of course nothing completely new, but as always, it's the how that counts. And this is something to be proud of. As in times past, antipasti, primi, secondi and dolci are served simultaneously at the "Quattro Atti," a real experience. Alternatively, you can dine à la carte, such as potato gnocchi, dandelion nettles and crab guazzeto. Chef Alajmo also uses ingredients straight from Venice's lagoon. Top!

The restaurant also knows how to convince in culinary terms: the focus is on traditional Italian cuisine and Venetian dishes, created by the talented young chef Damiano Bassano from Puglia.

Tip for the aperitivo:

Terrazza Aperol

The cheerful orange trendy drink is on everyone's lips: Aperol is also a favourite in Venice. It should therefore come as no surprise that the drink from Padua also has its own Venetian restaurant for the popular aperitivo, namely the Terrazza Aperol. In addition to the refreshing Aperol Spritz, light dishes for the small appetite are served - typical Venetian Cicchetti are lined up here with schiacciata or focaccia.
