The travel insurance company InsureMyTrip went to great lengths to identify the best cities for solo travelers in 2024. A total of 62 major cities worldwide were selected. These were awarded points in various categories. For example, for the cost of a stay, for safety and also for equality. If you combine safety with cost and equality, you can find the top five cities for solo travelers in Europe. Looking only at the safety aspect, the following picture emerges:

5: Heraklion, Greece

Highlights include the Palace of Knossos, one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe, the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion with its collection of Minoan art and the well-preserved city walls. 4: Macao, China

The list of the safest cities for solo travelers in 2024 contains many surprises. Among them is Macao, which still tends to fly under the tourist radar of European travelers anyway. Yet there's a particularly exciting mix of Chinese and Portuguese culture to discover here. The historic old town is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Architecture fans should put the ruins of St. Paul's Church and Senado Square on their bucket list. Numerous casinos have earned Macao the reputation of an Asian Las Vegas. Luxurious resorts included, of course.

Not only women in particular, but all travelers can feel particularly safe in Dubai. There are strict laws on the one hand and many special facilities for women on the other. For example, separate subway compartments and buses as well as women's sections in parks and beaches. Although these were not designed to guarantee women a particularly high level of safety, but rather to comply with the religious regulations of Islam. However, the effect is the same. Even as a woman traveling alone, you never feel threatened in Dubai.

Respectful and friendly locals make Chiang Mai in Thailand one of the safest cities for solo travelers in 2024, as does the particularly low crime rate. The city is known for its quiet and peaceful atmosphere. In addition, the tourist infrastructure is very well developed, and the use of public transport and paths is also safe for women traveling alone. There's also a large expat community, which provides additional support. Many hotels offer special accommodation for women traveling alone.

1: Medina, Saudi Arabia

As the second most important holy city in Islam (after Mecca), the atmosphere in Medina is particularly peaceful. Around 60 percent Saudis and 40 percent people from abroad live here. A small part is not accessible to non-Muslims. However, the rest of the city scores with sights, shopping centers, souks, Dar Al Madinah Museum and hospitality. Strict (religious) laws and their consistent enforcement as well as traditionally great respect for women lead to a high sense of security for solo travelers. It goes without saying that this respect is expected to be reciprocated by observing dress codes.
