On October 1, when the leaves begin changing color and all the grapes are harvested, it's time for "Törggelen" in South Tyrol. This centuries-old custom is a special time where tradition and enjoyment are paramount. One may assume that the word "Törggelen" is derived from "torkeln" – the German word for "staggering" – and refers to excessive wine consumption. After all, "Sußer" (sweet, unfermented grape juice) and young wine ("Nuier") play a major role. However, the term comes from the Latin "torquere", which simply means "pressing wine". In addition to the latest vintage, leisurely autumn walks through vineyards, chestnut groves, picturesque villages, and leafy forests are also a big part of the "Törggelen" season. Because wherever chestnuts and wine grow, Buschen and Hofschänken (local wine taverns) open their doors, usually from early October to late November. South Tyrolean delicacies such as Schlutzkrapfen, bacon, cheese, farmhouse bread, chestnuts and Keschtn (sweet doughnuts) take center stage as the ideal accompaniment to the new wine.
