5 phrases to master on holiday in Spain

Even a few short phrases are enough to be able to communicate!

9 September 2021

Spain is once again one of the most popular destinations for European holiday destinations. Good food, fantastic weather and the sunny disposition of the Spaniards promise an unforgettable holiday experience. It's even better when you can also enjoy the one or the other phrase in Spanish. And that is not difficult at all! A few sentences are often enough to say thank you or order food and bring a smile to someone's face.

We have the most important phrases for you at a glance! These five phrases and words you should definitely know on holiday in Spain.

1. Greeting

With a short "Hola" you simply say "Hello" in Spain - and that actually at any time of day. If you want to go one step further and take your Spanish to the next level, you can also adapt the greeting to the time of day. "Buenos días" means "Good morning", "Buenas tardes" means "Good day" and with "Buenas noches" you wish someone a good night - it's that easy!

2. How's it going?

Asking someone how they are doing is never wrong and can be a good conversation opener. Especially if you're a tourist on holiday, you'll look more likeable if you've learned at least a few phrases in the local language. With "¿Qué tal?" you ask in Spanish, "how are you?". The usual response to this is, "Muy bien. Gracias" - "Very good, thank you!"

3. please & thank you

When on holiday in Spain, asking for something in Spanish or being able to say thank you in the local language is simply part of good manners. And it's really not difficult: "Por favor" means "Please" and you can say thank you with "Gracias"; "You're welcome" is said with a short "De nada!

4. Can you help me, please?

You want to ask for directions or need help in the hotel - nothing easier than that: "¿Podría ayudarme?" is the right question for that; in English: "Can you please help me?". As open-minded and friendly as the Spaniards are, you will definitely not be let down!

5. Do you speak English or German?

Even if you can communicate with hand and foot - if you don't speak Spanish at all, you will of course have a hard time understanding anything - especially if you need help with directions, for example. But don't worry, even this language barrier is quickly broken. And that is by simply asking the person you are talking to if they also speak English or, in the best case, even German: "¿Habla inglés o alemán?" - "Do you speak English or German?"

With these five phrases, nothing stands in the way of a relaxed holiday in Spain!
