About the Kurumba Maldives

Opened in October 1972 in the Indian Ocean, Kurumba Maldives was the first private island resort in the Maldives. Four young Maldivians heralded the beginning of the country's tourism industry with 30 huts made of coral and coconut leaves on an uninhabited coconut plantation island. The first guests were barefoot backpackers in search of sand, sea and sun. At the time, the Maldives was isolated from the outside world, with no telephones, grid electricity, water or paved roads, only a few vehicles and a small airstrip built by volunteers. About 1,000 tourists visited the island in 1972, and in 2016 there were 1.4 million tourists in over 117 resorts in the Maldives.
