If you're looking for the best of both worlds - namely a summer vacation and spring-like temperatures - you should actually consider Gozo, the enchanting gem in the Mediterranean, for an autumn vacation. The little sister of Malta attracts visitors with mild temperatures that are perfect for outdoor activities. Hiking, sightseeing, walks and mountain bike tours are all possible and not at all exhausting with temperatures between 20 and 25 °C. The island is also easy to reach. It takes just 2.5 hours to come here from most European airports. But the weather isn't the only thing that makes Gozo an insider tip in fall.

Relaxed atmosphere

Naturally, fewer tourists visit Gozo in fall than during the summer months. This way the island exudes a quiet character giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself in authentic local life. The numerous festivals on Gozo offer an opportunity to do just that. One of these is the “Fontana Wine Festival” at the end of September. As well as tasting fine wines, there's also live music and awards ceremonies. The next highlight in the island's packed calendar of events is also just around the corner. Because on October 19, there's the "Kite & Wind Festival".

It offers impressive shows, lots of colorful kites, exciting workshops and lots of fun. Of course, you can also fly your own kite. Autumn also marks the start of the opera season on Gozo. In the two theaters Aurora and Astra, opera performances are on the program almost daily. Then, the two stages shine in special splendor. Speaking of sparkle: in November, the beautiful tradition of Mixegħla tal-Qaddisin, which lights up the whole of Gozo in the glow of thousands of candles, is a delight.

Autumn destination for active people

There's hardly a sport that doesn't involve snow that you can't do on Gozo. The water, often Caribbean blue and crystal clear, is perfect for plowing through in a kayak. Or to get to the bottom of it with diving equipment. The north-west of the island in particular is known for its impressive caves, tunnels, reefs and rock formations.

The grippy limestone rocks, on the other hand, make the hearts of climbing fans beat faster. The combination of water and rocks also makes them an ideal adventure playground for active people. Because deep water soloing is not only possible here. Unsecured climbing above the sea is also extremely popular! On the cliffs and coastal cliffs, there are many tours with difficulty level 6 (UIAA).

Thanks to the mild temperatures, Gozo is also easy to explore on foot in fall. Thanks to steep cliffs and gentle hills, there are routes of varying degrees of difficulty. Breathtaking views beckon along the sea and somewhat more challenging paths. Inland, on the other hand, the routes are more leisurely. Hikes to the Xwejni salt pans and the Dwerja Walk are particularly worthwhile.

Foodies on Gozo

The climate in combination with the fertile soil ensures that Gozo produces a range of high-quality foods. The island is known for its wines, for example. But olive oil, honey, tomatoes and the world-famous cheese are not only popular with locals. There's perhaps no need to mention the excellent seafood - fresh catches are so commonplace on restaurant menus. Speaking of restaurants: in Marsalforn, Mgarr and Xlendi there are numerous places where you can eat with a picturesque view of the sea. If you want to see the sunset, you have to go to Xlendi.

Gozo also offers foodies something special in fall. This is the season for lampuki (also known as mahi-mahi). Prepared in a wide variety of ways, it is a seasonal and fresh delicacy.
