Tourism and Sustainability: The Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort on Aruba as a Role Model
The Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort shows how tourism and sustainability are compatible. At the 26th UN Climate Change Conference in November, founder and CEO Ewald Biemans shares his concrete ideas.

Whoever thinks of long-distance travel no longer only thinks of untouched nature, colorful coral reefs with fish in all imaginable colors and white sandy beaches, but unfortunately also inevitably often of littered beaches, dead reefs and entire stretches of land that have withered away. Taking this into consideration, it is not surprising that more and more hotels make their contribution to protect the nature that surrounds them. The Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort on Aruba is one of them.

Personal commitment
The founder and managing director of the Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort on the Dutch Antilles island, Ewald Biemans, has long been concerned about nature and environmental protection. Especially the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 was a wake-up call for him to accelerate the efforts to combine tourism and sustainability in the resort. In the meantime, the luxury resort is considered the first climate-neutral resort in the Caribbean and last year also won the Climate Action Award for Climate Neutral Now from the United Nations. In November 2021, Ewald Biemans will now speak at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference to act as a role model and also encourage others to work together to prevent the temperature from rising by more than 1.5 degrees.
Best practice for the tourism industry
The measures and initiatives implemented by Ewald Biemans and his team at Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort are replicable and can certainly be applied to other businesses in the hospitality industry. The high replicability and scalability of the catalogue of measures was also praised at the Climate Action Awards last year. "Our guests can exchange their carbon footprint for a sandy one at our resort. I will be honored to share our sustainability solutions at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference so that we can all have a healthier, safer and more resilient future."says Ewald Biemans.
Enjoy a climate-neutral stay
If you want to spend your vacation at the romantic Adults-Only Resort in the Caribbean without a guilty conscience towards the environment, the Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort on Aruba is just the right place. The romantic boutique hotel is not only equipped with solar panels on the roof, but also has fitness equipment that generates electricity when in use. Additionally, all rooms are equipped with motion sensors so that the air conditioning shuts off as soon as guests leave the room. Between 32 and 38 percent energy can be saved per year in this way. Great importance is also attached to the economical use of water: A special water recycling system, in which "used" water is used to water the garden, for example, helps with this. Moreover, no chemical cleaning agents are used in the entire facility. The list of measures implemented at the resort is much longer, and more ideas are constantly being worked on. This way, holidaymakers can enjoy some downtime here while at the same time protecting the planet for future generations.
