Margot Gärtner: Call Bruno!

The advertising agency missmargo is an Innsbruck institution. And it's no longer a secret that its founder Margot Gärtner has branched out into interior design under the name CALL BRUNO. Her projects combine timeless, eclectic elegance with that certain something.

The Private Banking department and several branches of Hypo Tirol Landesbank, parts of Privatbank Schöllerbank, the restaurant "Gaia Cuisine", the bistro bar "LOU", Peintner Frozen Yogurt in Maria-Theresien-Straße, a renovated 14th century old town house with 22 individually designed apartments and a doctor's practice in the Zillertal valley are just a few of the creations of designer Margot Gärtner. The interplay of color and form, coordinated with the surroundings and existing buildings, is crucial for the Innsbruck native. "The most important things are location, surroundings, and the customer's ideas and wishes. If you listen carefully, the first meeting usually sets the tone for the project. That's when the first mood board is created in my head," says Gärtner.

Where does she draw inspiration from? "My everyday life inspires me just as much as travel or good conversations with friends and acquaintances. That's why I never actually stop working, but I don't see that as a burden. I often come across sensational color or material mixes in the most unthinkable places that you would never have guessed were there. These then find their place in the next project. A good example of this are the door handles in the 'Gaia Cuisine' restaurant – they're actually old irons from around 1920 that came from an antique market in Dolceacqua and were reworked here on site. The result is a beautiful, unique detail, far removed from generic designs. And that's exactly what I aim for. For me, every project is unique."

She honed her keen eye for the essentials in her main profession of advertising and graphics, which the Innsbruck native has been working in for almost 20 years now. "The most beautiful logo only works to a limited extent if the surroundings or the space don't match; the logo cannot come alive. Communication in space has always fascinated me – and what began with signage design has now become the interior design studio 'Call Bruno', which makes me very happy. The combination of graphics and interior design is so diverse that I really enjoy going to work every day. The exchange with architects, craftsmen, designers and retailers is also incredibly exciting. You always learn something new," says Gärtner.

Which projects would she like to tackle next? "A special hideaway with a unique signature 'in the middle of nowhere', new great restaurants in Innsbruck, an animal shelter and a winery. We'd better get started right away!" laughs Margot Gärtner - a veritable "jack of all trades".
