Off Kuda Villingili, surfers can ride the longest left-breaking wave in the Maldives.

July 9, 2024

The Maldives are known above all for their insanely high romance factor. And, of course, for the luxury that surrounds guests on most of the resort islands. Or as a hotspot for diving and snorkeling fans. But very few people know that surfing in the Maldives is also simply a treat. Chickens Break, which is just next to the still young resort Kuda Villingili, is the longest left-breaking wave in the island state. Between May and October, the conditions are perfect for surfing fans.

From poultry farm to surfing hotspot

Most good stories begin with "Once upon a time". So does this one: Once upon a time, there was a small island in the North Malé Atoll that was used for poultry farming. Hence the name "Chickens". When the farm closed down, two Australian surfers Tony Hussein Hinde and Mark Scanlon were stranded nearby. They discovered one of the longest and liveliest left-breaking waves in the Maldives. Divided into two main sections, it has a long lip, which creates a wonderful ten-second tunnel in the right wind conditions, and a long shoulder.

Chickens is relatively consistent, but it reaches its highest barrels during the summer months. When it is reasonably calm and the tides are closer to high tide, Chickens is at its peak. The ideal time for this is between May and October, with the most consistent conditions between July and August. Kuda Villingili is located in the immediate vicinity and is therefore the ideal starting point for surfing in the Maldives.

living diversity

Only open since 2021, Kuda Villingili is a popular destination for a wide variety of travelers. Honeymooners are regularly welcomed here. But families with children and multi-generational vacationers also appreciate the resort, which is located close to Malé. And surfers? They love to come. Kuda Villingili is the only resort with direct beach access to Chickens Break. So if you want to ride the waves, you don't need a boat transfer – you can be there in just a few strokes. Even Sebastian Steudtner, the German world record holder for the highest wave ever surfed, appreciates the resort.

But he doesn't want to set any new records while surfing in the Maldives. He just wants to enjoy himself. He also wishes to continue exploring the ocean and bring it closer to people. And when you're done with Chickens Break, there are five other well-known surf spots in the immediate vicinity: Cokes, Ninjas, Sultans, Honkys and Jails. As impressive as these may sound, beginners need not fear. Numerous baby waves and the water sports store at Kuda Villingili ensure that you can learn to surf quickly.

Of course, the luxurious resort also offers numerous highlights away beyond surfing. For instance, there are 39 beach villas and 36 water villas, all of which boast open-plan layouts. There is also a spa that offers soothing treatments. And, of course, a diverse gastronomic selection, with seven culinary experiences providing variety. The fact that great importance is also attached to sustainability is the cherry on top.
