Green Globe Certification: Sustainability For Tourism
Very often lately, we read about hotels that proudly present their Green Globe certification. But what does this really mean?

You often get the impression that sustainability is a buzzword that has increasingly degenerated into a marketing term, especially in recent years. Take Styrian chalet villages, for example, which serve mangoes and avocados for breakfast and still boast about sustainability because there's a solar system on the roof. The Green Globe certification has something to counter this. And it has been doing so since 1992.
Introduction of Green Globe certification
As early as the 1990s, it became clear that rapid action and a rethink were needed to save the planet. One company that's particularly committed to this is the Green Globe organization. It's internationally active in the promotion of environmentally conscious and socially responsible business practices. For example, Green Globe supports companies in reducing their environmental impact, using resources sparingly and at the same time achieving a positive social impact on communities.

In 1992, the first companies received their Green Globe certification. The first were pioneers in the implementation of sustainable practices: hotels, resorts, tour operators and venues that stood out for their commitment to environmental protection and social responsibility. Its pioneering role helped to raise awareness of sustainable tourism and inspired other companies to follow its example. Since then, it has become a global symbol of sustainable tourism and is used by companies worldwide.
And what do you get out of it?
The Green Globe Standard comprises 44 core criteria with over 380 sub-criteria that must be met as a minimum in order to receive certification. Once awarded, it's reviewed twice a year. Location and local factors are of course taken into account. For example, the avocados for breakfast in the tropics mentioned at the beginning wouldn't be something that would stand in the way of certification.

Green Globe certification offers companies the opportunity not only to improve their environmental performance, but also to increase their competitiveness and gain consumer confidence. By meeting strict criteria and undergoing regular audits, certified companies can demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and make a positive contribution to protecting our planet.
How many Green Globe members are there?
More than 600 hotels, restaurants and tourism companies are now part of the movement. They are spread across 80 countries around the world. Companies that meet the certification criteria for five consecutive years become Gold Members after a further review. The Platinum Members are a special feature. They have been certified for 10 consecutive years, five of them as Gold Members.

So if you choose one of the hotels and providers with Green Globe certification for your vacation, you can be sure that sustainability criteria are met at all levels. And going on vacation with a good and green conscience is even more fun.
