Hilton survey shows: Multigenerational travel is the travel trend in 2022

Great holiday needs & longing for relatives: Travelling with the whole family is the new trend!

21 September 2021

A globally conducted survey by Hilton shows that the travel needs of people worldwide have reached a peak. This is because only 36 percent of the people surveyed had the opportunity to travel in 2020 and 2021 and go on holiday . So there is a lot of catching up to do. Especially travelling with the whole Family, so-called multigenerational trips, are therefore in vogue.

The survey was conducted by YouGov in September 2021. 8,000 participants worldwide were surveyed. www.hilton.com

Travel trend 2022: Holidays with relatives

A study carried out by Hilton in Germany shows that trips with the whole family, i.e. multi-generational trips, will be in vogue in the coming year. Well over half of the adults surveyed from Germany said that they would not be able to take their planned trips in 2020 and 2021. This applied not only to regular vacations, but also to family visits. Thus, almost 50 percent of the survey participants have not seen their family members living abroad for a year or more.

As a result, the longing is great: 59 percent of those surveyed miss their relatives and would like, as soon as possible, to make up for the missed experiences with their family. The desire for change is widespread: 63 percent of German adults say that their family urgently needs time off after the challenging months. Almost 40 percent are even willing to spend more on a trip than before in order to make missed travel experiences come true now.

What are multigenerational trips?

To make up for all that many travel enthusiasts and family people missed during the Corona pandemic, a new trend now seems to have emerged: Multigenerational travel. In order to finally see the relatives again on the one hand and to make up for the missed vacation on the other hand, both are simply combined. The logical consequence after the long time without each other and the great desire for vacation.

This is also shown by the Hilton survey: more than half of the respondents, 54 percent, will probably travel with their extended family circle such as siblings, cousins and grandparents in the coming year. Younger adults between the ages of 18 and 34 are particularly interested in this travel concept, with over 60 percent of respondents in this age group indicating a correspondingly high willingness to do so.

"Our survey illustrates how much the public yearns to spend time together with their favorite people and plan a bigger and better vacation to make up for all they've missed. By Hilton's guaranteed interconnecting rooms, special offers for families and a wide hotel portfolio, we look forward to welcoming families to destinations near or far.", says David Kelly, Hilton's senior vice president in Continental Europe.

Family holiday in Europe

According to the Hilton survey, holiday destinations in Europe will be particularly popular for multi-generational trips in 2022. For joint trips with the family, travel enthusiasts particularly consider Spain, Italy, France, Portugal or Turkey. Some families can also imagine long-distance travel. New York City and Florida are high up on the popularity scale.

If you are also planning an intergenerational holiday in Europe, we especially recommend these hotels for a family holiday !
