Always further, faster, bigger and better. That's how the human species works. It's similar with the airport business. The second largest airport in the world in terms of area is no longer Denver International Airport. That's because, with 57,429 more hectares of space, it has been overtaken by Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, which recently opened in China .

The airport project already started in May 2016 - the opening finally followed in June 2021. The airport is located about 50 kilometers away from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, and is now officially considered the second largest airport in the world. Up to 60 million passengers can pass through the 71,000-hectare Chengdu Tianfu International Airport every year. In comparison, the airport in Denver, which was previously the second largest airport in the world, had only 13,571 hectares. One advantage of the new airport is that the subway line connecting Tianfu International Airport with downtown Chengdu takes about 40 minutes to reach the city center.

King Fahd International Airport, or Dammam Airport, is the largest airport in the world in terms of area, covering 77,600 hectares. Of this, only 3,675 hectares are used for aviation purposes. A large, impressive mosque rises from the ground in front of the terminal with its two runways. The airport in Saudi Arabia is located in the city of Dammam. From the center of Dammam Corniche, King Fahd International Airport is 35 minutes (44 kilometers) away by car.
