Cities on the beach: The best of Nice
A place in the south of France that you definitely have to see!
2 July 2021
It is a point of attraction for allTravellerswho love the south of France: Nice. The vibrant capital of the Alpes-Maritimes department offers countless opportunities. On the one hand there is the old town, Vieux Nice, with its narrow streets, colourful houses and daily markets; on the other hand there's the Promenade des Anglais with the famous city beach and numerous beach clubs - and of course the imposing architecture à la Place Masséna, which perfectly contrasts the picturesque landscape.
In the footsteps of famous artists
Unfortunately, most guests stay only until they have knocked off the highlights, but Nice has so much more to offer. No other place on the French Mediterranean coast has more museums, churches or such a variety of gardens and parks up its sleeve. In addition, there are festivals (highlight: the jazz festival in July!), markets and sporting events. The city's architectural heritage, which ranges from Baroque to Belle Époque, is complemented by many spectacular modern buildings. And among these monumental artistic gems, you can still playfully walk in the footsteps of famous artists, all of whom were drawn to the dazzling light and airiness of the south of France. Tip: a private tour through the city is an absolute enrichment!
Best of Nice
If, in this diverse city, you can't decide what to do first, why not take some time and stay longer? Here are a few highlights that you should not miss!
The best insider tip
You have to be good on foot to leave the city centre behind and walk around Mont Moron. However, you will be greatly rewarded. In Port Lympia, Nice presents itself more leisurely than elsewhere, the bars, cafés and restaurants are more authentic and the atmosphere even more exuberant. But this is hardly possible, as the atmosphere is good everywhere in the city. The u-shaped harbour nestles in the picturesque landscape and from here you can plan numerous excursions!
The best for shopping
Marché à la Brocante Saleya
Cours Saleya et Place Pierre Gautier, 06300 Nice
For many a big surprise, for fans a fixed reason to visit the city: Nice has not only many antique shops where you can find real bargains, but also an antique market that surpasses all others. From fin de siècle finds to midcentury classics, everyone will find something here! The antiques market takes place every Monday.
The best beach
It may not be the most beautiful beach, but it's definitely the most iconic. The city beach scores with its unique colour and a happy round of beach clubs that always have a spot to spare - even in high season. People sunbathe and dine in close quarters, but that's part of the unique flair; that and the blue-and-white striped umbrellas. Tip: Beau Rivage Spa!
The best excursion
There are many good reasons to visit the small village Saint-Paul-de-Vence in the hinterland of Nice: on the one hand the location, on the other hand the view towards the sea. Most guests come because of the world famous hotel and restaurant "La Colombe d'Or", where many stars of the art world have stayed and left their works, from Picasso to Chagall. And then, of course, there is the Fondation Maeght, a private museum with a sculpture garden.
