Plastic-free until 2022

The Six Senses Hotels want to be plastic-free by 2022. To achieve this, they are now receiving support from the SustainChain.  A platform that drives action to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. With a focus on global collaboration, the platform connects participants in the sustainability ecosystem to join collective enterprises, share success methods, and scale solutions.

Starting with single-use plastic products, each Six Senses resort is gradually getting rid of plastic. To achieve this, however, a lot of innovations are required: from packaging materials to fabrics to furniture. On the SustainChain platform, you can share ideas with relevant suppliers and develop strategies together to bring about long-term change.

Six Senses has been working on the reduction of disposable products for many years. Already in the 90s, the hotel chain started to use refillable ceramic dispensers in the bathrooms. Since 2003, refillable glass bottles with specially treated water have also been available. Group-wide, this saved over 2.4 million plastic bottles in 2019/2020. Straws have also been dispensed with for some time.

Plastic free kitchen

In parallel, Jeffrey Smith, Vice President Sustainabilty, and Six Senses Yao Noi worked on a prototype for a plastic-free kitchen, which will now also be available in the other resorts of the group. Smith explains: "The cooperation with SustainChain opens up new ways for us to innovate and work with value chains. This will enable us to meet not only the UN Sustainable Development Goals, but also our big target of Plastic Free in 2022. We already see great progress and the opportunity to grow further together."
