Fantastic Jamaica: On the trail of Ian Fleming

Plus: A James Bond vacation at the exclusive Sandals Resorts.

30 April 2021

When you think of the writer Ian Fleming, you probably immediately think of his spy novels based around James Bond. Some of the stories take place in Jamaica, a very special Location for Fleming.

Jamaica - the second home of Ian Fleming

Ian Fleming discovered his love for the Caribbean island during a trip he took as a member of military intelligence. Jamaica was to become his second home, which he visited many more times throughout his life. He particularly enjoyed staying at Sandals Royal Plantation for its casual elegance and authentic Jamaican ambience. The boutique resort boasts luxurious suites with spectacular ocean views, first-class butler service and five gourmet restaurants.

Caribbean inspiration

The idea for the name of his main character also originated in Jamaica. It was there that Ian Fleming met an American ornithologist during a stay: James Bond. In 1952, he wrote the first novel of the James Bond saga in Jamaica, called Casino Royale.

Jamaica is also a recurring backdrop in James Bond films: the first film in the saga, "James Bond 007 chases Dr. No", was set on the Caribbean island in 1963. Some scenes were filmed on Oracabessa Beach, which has since been called James Bond Beach. Jamaica was also the setting for "Live and Let Die", which was filmed in Montego Bay in 1973, and the following year for "The Man with the Golden Gun", which was set on the island's south coast.

Back to Jamaica for the latest James Bond movie

Jamaica has once again been chosen as the location for the latest film in the James Bond saga, more than 50 years after the first film was shot. "No Time to Die," which hits theaters this year, is the 25th film based on Ian Fleming's spy novels. James Bond has left the Secret Service and is enjoying a quiet life in Jamaica until his old friend Felix Leiter visits him and asks for help. "No Time to Die" was filmed in Port Antonio, Kingston and Ocho Rios. The film also features the Golden Eye Estate, the property once owned by Ian Fleming.
