1 February 2021
At the foot of the highest mountains in the entire Alpine arc of Switzerland, the first chalet luxury resort in a European Skiing area planned. The Ritz-Carlton Zermatt will be located on the western slope above Zermatt and offer a direct view of the Matterhorn.
First ski resort in Europe
Hotel owner Mario Julen has signed a contract with luxury brand Marriott International (7500 hotels in 132 countries, 30 hotel brands) for The Ritz-Carlton Zermatt. It will be the first resort development by an international hotel chain to be built in the car-free mountain village of Zermatt. For the native of Zermatt, this is a project close to his heart: "This is a very emotional project that has occupied me for 13 years. It is a declaration of love to my homeland, but also one to the top hotel industry in general," says the owner proudly. A milestone not only for Mario Julen, but also for the international luxury hotel chain. Because after The Ritz-Carlton Geneva, it is only the second hotel of the brand in Switzerland and the very first ski resort in Europe.
69 rooms and suites with Matterhorn view
Located on the western slope and facing south, the highlight will be the direct view of the Matterhorn from all rooms and suites as well as the two restaurants and bars. A panoramic view of an iconic mountain backdrop is also offered by the large outdoor terrace. Other attractions include a private dining room, direct access to the slopes via "ski-in/ski-out" principle, a spa with indoor/outdoor pools and a fitness room. The luxury hotel will also offer meeting and event space.
Modern design with alpine flair
Three key aspects played a central role in the design of the luxury project: Texture, light and colour. The renowned Parisian architectural firm AW² won the deal and is now responsible for the design and implementation of the facility. The contemporary interior, with a combination of local wood and stone, is said to pay homage to the charm of local mountain chalets. The Ritz-Carlton Zermatt is scheduled to open in 2026.
