Jumping straight into the sea after the Zoom meeting: what sounds like a dream at first will be the next big thing. Trend be. When travel is possible again, of course. The talk is of "workation" - combining work with vacation. However, a survey by the holiday pirates shows that the majority (91 percent) have never tried "workation". In fact, 73 percent don't even know what the term means. The majority, however, would like to combine work and vacation, because after last year at the latest, it is clear that not only the office is suitable as a workplace.

Greece and its islands

Greece is suitable for workation in several respects: The country is particularly attractive due to the mild summer temperatures and the small time difference of only one hour. Meetings and phone calls with colleagues or clients can thus be implemented without any jet lag. If you rent a house in a small village, you can dive right into the life of the locals after work. Another big advantage: Due to the many islands, a stay of several weeks in Greece with a lot of variety is guaranteed. With domestic flights or by ferry, the islands can be reached in no time.

Canary Islands

With seven islands, the Canary Islands offer plenty of variety. The year-round mild temperatures with hot summer make the archipelago the ideal destination for workation. The natural offer is great: hiking to the volcano Teide on Tenerife, through the nature park Cumbre Vieja on La Palma or along the dunes of Maspalomas on Gran Canaria. The islands of El Hierro and La Gomera are particularly quiet retreats. The time difference on the Canaries is only one hour. In addition, the islands have a huge workation community, networking meetups and co-working spaces, as well as very well-developed internet.

Portugal

Those who choose Workation in Portugal will enjoy a successful combination of cultural cities and beach life. Lisbon and Porto are bustling with international life at a low cost of living. At the end of the working day, the many very varied beaches await. A new hobby is surfing - in the summer there are ideal conditions on the west coast for a beginner's course. If you prefer to watch the pros, take a winter trip to Nazare. Here the surf cracks regularly set records with waves of over twenty metres. Peace and relaxation are offered by Portugal's many nature reserves.

Egypt

Egypt is a little surprise in the list of top workation destinations. Those who love summer temperatures instead of the domestic cold in winter will certainly feel at home in the land of the pharaohs. The holiday pirates recommend the town of Dahab with only one hour time difference. The former fishing village is located in the south of the Sinai Peninsula directly on the sea and is nowadays a Mecca for digital nomads. In addition to good internet, the city convinces with very reasonable prices. Many inhabitants spend their free time doing sports. With temperatures always above twenty degrees during the day, diving is just as much fun as hiking or climbing.

South Africa

Despite the considerable distance to Europe, the time difference in South Africa is only one hour. The seasons are exactly opposite. For several years now, the pioneers of digital technology have been praising Cape Town for its good infrastructure and top internet. Combined with the exotic nature and a variety of tourist offers, this makes the cosmopolitan city the perfect workation destination. Especially recently, Cape Town has experienced an extreme increase in the number of cafés, coworking and coliving offers due to its international community.

Morocco

Trips to Morocco also offer an exotic work experience. The country is particularly recommended for digital nomads who work almost exclusively online and operate independently of location. Taghazout is the perfect starting point for a work travel tour. The fishing village is located on the Atlantic coast and is considered a workation stronghold. A must see is the city of Ubud with its spectacular temples, surrounded by traditional rice terraces and rainforest. Only about an hour's drive away is Canggu, right on the coast. Here digital nomads meet surfers and a correspondingly very relaxed atmosphere. Outside your own four walls, you can boot up your laptop here in one of the many cafés, shops or bars. Many Europeans and Australians found a new home here, so that a very large expat community developed.
