Malta: dream destination and gourmet secret tip

The island paradise in the Mediterranean scores not only with endless beaches and hundreds of hours of sunshine - new star and gourmet restaurants testify to moments of pleasure at the highest level.

April 4, 2022

Mediterranean flair, countless hours of sunshine and the crystal-clear sea: The island of Malta and its neighboring islands Gozo and Comino are true insider tips in the Mediterranean. But not only the unspoiled nature and charming places of the island attract travelers. The three islands turn out to be true oases of pleasure in the Mediterranean this summer. Influenced for centuries by a wide variety of cultural influences, the cuisine is multifaceted and unique.

Culinary land of milk and honey

From savory dumplings to grilled vegetables, fish is a popular ingredient in the dishes, along with locally grown produce. Depending on the season, people eat spinotta (perch), dott (catfish), cerna (predatory perch), dentici (toothfish), sargu (bream) and trill (mullet), swordfish and tuna, then, in autumn, the famous lampuka (a type of mackerel). Octopus and squid are also popular. Finely prepared with locally produced olive oil and spices, the dishes make gourmets rave. Traditional Maltese cuisine has experienced a true renaissance in recent years - recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation can be found more and more frequently on restaurant menus.

excellent cuisine

This year already the third Guide Michelin shines for Malta and honors the excellent restaurants of the island. Five Michelin stars, four Bib Gourmands and numerous recommendations make Malta the new culinary hotspot. The five star restaurants Under Grain, Noni and ION - The Harbour in the capital Valletta, the De Mondion in Mdina and the Bahia newly settled in Balzan convince already for the second time with their creations. From the same house as the Under Grain comes the Grain Street, which was awarded a Bib Gourmand for the first time this year. The Bib Gourmand is awarded to restaurants that stand out for their particularly good food and good value for money. The Terrone in Birgu, the Rubino in Valletta and the Commando in Mellieħa can also be pleased about the award.
