Paris. The city of love ... and of the croissant. The delicate, airy, buttery pastry is at least as famous as the Eiffel Tower - and certainly a lot more popular.

According to legend, however, the croissant did not originate in Paris at all. It is said that it was actually invented in Vienna, more precisely around 1683 during the Turkish siege. Supposedly, the Viennese bakers, who were awake early, sounded the alarm when the Turks were about to dig a tunnel under the city walls. To celebrate the victory, they invented a pastry in the shape of the Turkish crescent.

In France, the Austrian croissant - or so the legend goes - was popularized by none other than Marie Antoinette, who throughout her life had a strong connection with her Austrian roots. There it was then named after the crescent shape of the waxing moon - croissant de lune .

Today it is known all over the world and many can not miss it at the breakfast table. Paris is undoubtedly the best place to sin with a few croissants. However, which one is the best is subjective.
